New Balance 550
NEW BALANCE 550, THE RENEWAL OF A CLASSIC
NEW BALANCE 550 FOR WOMEN & MEN: ITS HISTORY
New Balance was created in 1906 by William J. Riley, a shoemaker from Boston who set himself the aim of helping people with foot problems by developing orthopaedic insoles that offered better support at the arch of the foot. The brand became known internationally in the 1960s when it decided to enter the market of running shoes.
After finding success with running models such as the New Balance 990, the brand decided to take on the courts of basketball with the 550 in 1989. This new b-ball silhouette fits into the classic trainer models of the 80s, with a build in premium leather and a rubber sole. You had to wait until 2020 for the vintage design to meet with a brand-new success among the sneaker community, in the image of the new New Balance 550 White Green.
ON-TREND COLLABORATIONS FOR THIS SNEAKER
In full renewal during 2020, New Balance decided to relaunch its retro model through a collaboration with the label Aimé Leon Dore of Teddy Santis on the pack Basketball Oxford within the collection Uniform Program. The New York designer reworks the silhouette by giving it a beige treatment on the sole and the laces, lending it an aged look that would win over all fans of sneakers. The collaboration would meet with resounding success in the sneaker world and would be renewed on the brand's most emblematic models, such as the New Balance 991 with its Made in UKbuild.
In the same spirit, the collaboration with the sports agent Rich Paul takes up a similar colour code with cream tones and sky blue that give it the air of a luxurious relic frozen in time, for a style that pays tribute to its heritage of the 80s.
TOWARDS THE MODEL GOING MAINSTREAM?
Are we going to see a fate similar to the Nike Dunk Low ? That is one of the questions still without an answer. Indeed, through its adoption by the wider public and its on-trend side, the New Balance 550 could quite well be offered in many colourways. New Balance could also choose to keep a certain form of exclusivity, as is currently the case with very low quantities, which explains resale prices that are sometimes very high.
By meeting the growing demand for the New Balance 550, the Boston brand could establish itself as a brand able to rival Nike on sneakers and trainers in general.
With the appearance of the two colourways Syracuse and UNC, the firm nonetheless seems to want to draw on the most on-trend colours of the moment, for men and women alike. With the arrival of new models such as the New Balance 2002R and the New Balance 204L, the American brand aims to win over a younger audience but keeps offering special editions on its legendary models, in the image of the New Balance 992.
