NIKE MIND 001, THE MULE WHO TALKS TO THE BRAIN THROUGH THE SOLE OF THE FEET
THE FIRST SHOE OF THE NIKE MIND SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
For forty years, Nike worked on cushioning and propulsion. The Mind 001 opens another project: the brain. It is the first creation of the Mind Science Department, a team of neuroscientists, physiologists and designers housed within the Nike Sport Research Lab, which has one of the few mobile brain imaging laboratories in the world. Ten years of development, hundreds of athletes tested, and an idea that Matt Nurse, scientific director of Nike, summarizes as follows: the mule as a sensory antenna.
Presented in November 2025 with its lace-up sister, the Mind 002, it is released on January 8 2026 at $95 and runs out in a few hours. This mule is not designed for competition but for what surrounds it: pre-match and recovery, the moments when you want to feel calm, grounded, present. Erling Haaland was one of the first wearers.
22 FOAM KNOTS UNDER THE FOOT
It's all in the sole. The Mind 001 is on board 22 independent foam nodes, mapped to the anatomy of the foot, which rise and fall like little pistons with each step. They imitate the texture of a natural floor where a classic sole erases it. Under electroencephalogram, the Mind Science Department measured increased activity of the sensory cortex with the Mind 001 compared to a control shoe: the brain receives more information from its feet, and that is precisely the goal.
The rest of the construction serves this sole. A sculpted foam shell, a stretch fabric foot that lets the knots move, a mule shoe that can be put on and taken off hands-free. The knots, visible under the sole, are also the visual signature of the model: orange at launch, then available in contrasting colors.
FRAGMENT, FLYKNIT, PEARL PINK : THE CHANGES OF THE MIND 001
The three launch colors ā Light Smoke Grey, Solar Red, Black ā have been restocked several times, without ever lasting. On March 19, 2026, Hiroshi Fujiwara signed the platform's first collaboration: the Fragment Design x Nike Mind 001, black, with a Flyknit yoke on the instep, the lightning bolt on the toe and āConcept Testingā marking inspired by factory samples. It was she who introduced knitting to the silhouette, and who exploded the popularity.
Nike drew a line from it: the Mind 001 Flyknit, in Hyper Royal on May 27 then in Bronze Eclipse in June, with a gradient starting from black and knots in Volt or in Total Orange. Besides, the seasonal colors follow one another ā Cucumber Calm, Old Royal, Hemp, Pink Smoke, Summit White, Triple Black ā and two women's exclusives, Pearl Pink and Sail, plus Team Red, Blackened Blue, Geode Teal and White Speed Red. Rarely has a Nike model been released so quickly.
HOW TO WEAR AND CHOOSE YOUR MIND 001
It can be worn like a recovery mule: after training, at home, on the go, barefoot or in thin socks to let the knots work. In outfit, she takes the place occupied by Yeezy Slide or Crocs ā loose jogging pants, long shorts, high socks in winter ā with an argument that neither has: she's doing something. The size is unisex and true to size; in half size, go up. The Flyknit versions tighten the instep a little tighter.
