Nike Cortez
The origin of the Nike Cortez
The Cortezis quite simply the first shoe offered by Nike. It was in 1972, more than 50 yearsago, that Bill Bowerman , the co-founder of the Beaverton brand, designed the Nike Cortez. A track coach at the time, the American businessman wanted to create the most comfortable and hard-wearing pair possible for training and road racing.
But before unveiling the Cortez for Nike, Bill Bowerman had worked on this silhouette with the Japanese firm Asics. He had imported from Japan this pair, named TG-24, before releasing the model for Nike. Nike and Asics logically entered a legal battle when Bowerman wanted to sell the Cortez under the Nike brand. And it was the American label that finally won the case in 1974.
Named in reference to Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conquistador who brought about the fall of the Aztec empire, the Cortez then became the best-selling running pair of its time, and all that before the Forrest Gumpphenomenon.
Since then, this very light silhouette, thanks to its build partly in nylon, has never been forgotten. Still much appreciated, this unisex model is very popular on the side of women's sneakers as much as among men's sneakers.
Nike Cortez 4.0
The fruit of several collaborations over the years, such as with Kendrick Lamar, Comme des Garçons, Union LA or CLOT, the Nike Cortez has also been revisited by Sacai. The Japanese label founded by Chitose Abe reworked this iconic sneaker by adding notably a second Swoosh as well as a double sole, typical of the collaborations between the two brands.
