NEW BALANCE 550, THE REVIVAL OF A CLASSIC
NEW BALANCE 550 FOR WOMEN & MEN: ITS HISTORY
New Balance was founded in 1906 by William J.Riley, a shoemaker from Boston who set out to help people suffering from foot problems by developing orthopedic insoles that provided better arch support. The brand gained international recognition in the 1960s when it decided to enter the running shoe market.
After finding success with running models such as the New Balance 990, the brand decided to take on the basketball courts with the 550 in 1989. This new b-ball silhouette fits right in with the classic 80s sneaker models, featuring a premium leather construction and a rubber outsole. It wasn’t until 2020 that the design vintage experienced a whole new wave of success within the sneakers community, as seen with the new New Balance 550 White Green.
ON-TREND COLLABORATIONS FOR THIS SNEAKERS
In the midst of its revival in 2020, New Balance decided to relaunch its retro model through a collaboration with Teddy Santis’s label Aimé Léon Dore on the Basketball Oxford pack as part of the Uniform Program collection. The New York designer reworked the silhouette, giving the sole and laces a beige treatment for a vintage look that appealed to all sneakers fans. The collaboration was a resounding success in the sneakers scene and was renewed for the brand’s most iconic models, such as the New Balance 991 with a Made in UK design.
In the same spirit, the collaboration with sports agent Rich Paul uses a similar color scheme of cream tones and sky blue, giving it the look of a luxurious relic frozen in time for a style that pays tribute to its 80s heritage.
TOWARDS THE MAINSTREAMING OF THE MODEL?
Will we see a similar fate for the Nike Dunk Low ? This is one of the questions that remains unanswered for now. Indeed, due to its mainstream adoption and trendy appeal, the New Balance 550 could very well be released in multiple colorways. New Balance could also choose to maintain a certain level of exclusivity, as is currently the case with very limited quantities, which explains the sometimes very high resale prices.
By responding to the growing demand for the New Balance 550, the Boston brand could establish itself as a brand capable of competing with Nike in the sneakers and sneakers in general.
With the release of the two colorways Syracuse and UNC, the company still seems eager to draw inspiration from the trendiest colors of the moment, both for men and women. With the arrival of new models like the New Balance 2002R and the New Balance 204L, the American sportswear brand aims to win over a younger audience while continuing to offer special editions of its legendary models, such as the New Balance 992.
