NEW BALANCE 2002R: THE SILHOUETTE FAVOURED BY THE AFICIONADOS
NEW BALANCE 2002R: THE NEW HYPE
New Balance was founded in 1906 by William J. Riley, a shoemaker from Boston who set himself the goal of helping people with foot problems by developing orthopaedic insoles that gave better support at the arch of the foot. The brand became known internationally for its comfort and its quality in the 1960s when it decided to enter the market for running shoes. The brand sets itself apart from its competitors through the made-to-measure manufacture of its soles, its particular attention to the choice of materials used, reputed to be better than those on the market, as well as the finishes and details on the various panels during manufacture, which was originally Made In USA. It was in the 80s that the brand decided to turn to the basketball courts with its New Balance 550 , but it remains best known for the quality of its models made for running, such as the Super Comp, which would inspire the designer Charlotte Lee for the design of the New Balance 327. The brand with the capital “N” stands out for the support and stability of its silhouettes, created originally for sporting activity. Over the years it has gained significant expertise in the technologies used for its models, such as the New Balance 992 , strongly popularised by Steve Jobs, founder ofApple. The American brand keeps reinventing its image by collaborating with new designers such as Joe Freshgoods or JJJJound on its New Balance 990range. The brand gets people talking even more by releasing new colourways of its mythical New Balance 530 or of the New Balance 204L , which revisits the running style of the 2000s.
NEW BALANCE 2002R FOR MEN AND WOMEN: A LATE SUCCESS
In 2010, the American designer Andrew Nyssen unveiled the New Balance 2002, a premium running model meant to be top of the range and therefore Made In USA. It would be sold at $250, which makes it one of the most expensive sneakers in the history of New Balance. The silhouette would meet with niche success but would not manage to win over the wider public. The pair would nevertheless be considered THE perfect shoe by Ronnie Fieg himself. The creator of the label KITH even said that the full-length gel cushioning system in the sole was a suspension worthy of a luxury car. The shoe's moodboard was in fact inspired by Bentley saloons and by Hublot watches. It would take until 2020 and a certain Tetsuya Shono to see the silhouette revived. Product Line Manager for New Balance Japan, Shono is a former footwear designer who looked into the international commercial flop of the New Balance 2002, which had found its audience in Japan. He then decided to develop a prototype that took up the original upper but swapped the full-length gel midsole for that of the New Balance 860v2, an N-ERGY sole that has gel only at the heel. That is how the New Balance 2002R we all know came about. The Japanese designer would add the “R” to signal that the 2020 model was the retro of the 2010 one, following the naming of Jordan Brand reissues. One of Shono's decisive choices was to move manufacturing to Asia instead of the original Made In USA. With labour costing less, the launch price would fall enormously, from $250 to $130, to the great delight of New Balance fans.
NEW BALANCE 2002R: EXCEPTIONAL COLLABORATIONS
For the international launch of the model, New Balance decided to team up with Salehe Bembury. A former designer at the label Yeezy, the New York artist was vice-president of the sneakers and men's footwear department at the haute couture house Versace. The fruit of that collaboration would be the New Balance 2002R Peace Be The Journey, a pair that draws its inspiration from the famous Antelope Canyon in the south-west of the United States. The fruitful partnership would continue in 2021 with the New Balance 2002R Water Be The Guide , which takes up the colours of the Havasu Falls in Arizona, in aquatic and desert tones.
At the start of 2024, the Boston brand teamed up with the famous label JJJJound around the design of a new 2002R model that brings together everything we like about this pair: a mesh base, suede and leather overlays, and technical details that make it so successful, such as effective ventilation and a sole fitted with ABZORBtechnology.
Beyond the collaborations, the New Balance 2002R remains one of the most appreciated NBs on the market. The Protection Pack from New Balance is notably the most on-trend pack for the silhouette. That work was entrusted to Yue Wu, an employee of the Boston brand, who managed to bring to life one of the most appreciated designs, later carried over to the 1906R.
At the start of 2024, the brand then teamed up with the famous label JJJJound and worked again on a new 2002R model, mixing a mesh base, suede and leather overlays, effective ventilation and a sole fitted with ABZORB technology. In 2025, the silhouette got a new lease of life with the return of the New Balance Protection Pack, designed by Yue Wu, in its cult colourways Rain Cloud, Sea Salt and Phantom. A victim of its own success, the model comes in new colourways such as the Dragon Berry released in February 2025, as well as the Pastel Blue, Olive/Black and Sky Blue versions in the spring.
The new NB 2002R models are available in different colours, while combining an elegant design and exceptional comfort. Find the black New Balance 2002R, the blue New Balance 2002R or the beige New Balance 2002R.
