BALENCIAGA, A REVOLUTION IN THE WORLD OF LUXURY
FROM CHIC TO STREETWEAR, A CLEARLY MARKED EVOLUTION
Long before the futuristic sneakers rooted in popular culture, Balenciaga was the name of an ingenious Spanish designer, Cristobal Balenciaga, who revolutionised the history of fashion. Self-taught, his sharp taste for women's fashion was fed by the work of the greatest Parisian couturiers, whom he admired. Fleeing the civil war in 1936, he settled in Paris, where he ran his third couture house. Nicknamed “the King of Parisian couture”, his creations were a sublime blend of intense black, Spanish curves and bold colour.
After his death, Nicolas Ghesquière took over the artistic direction of the brand. Then in 2015, when Demna Gvasalia became director of Balenciaga in turn, a new era began: streetwear, extravagant and elegant. The house developed its sneaker business in a quirky, futuristic style. The luxury company has therefore gone through a striking evolution, when you compare its chic, feminine pieces with its ever more astonishing contemporary collections.
A BRAND THAT REDEFINES THE STANDARDS
If Balenciaga refined the female silhouette at the height of its founder's life, the brand has rejuvenated its marketing since the arrival of Demna Gvasalia, offering models rooted in the spirit of the times. Demna shows that fashion has no limits and rethinks the codes of sportswear.
From the FOAM, an inventive take on the platform clog, to the Tyrex and the Triple S which relaunched the “dad shoe”trend, Balenciaga is a byword for the avant-garde and for innovation. With the creation of the Speed Trainer, sneakers offering extreme comfort, the house won over millions of people worldwide. And the Track model took on the challenge of making a practical shoe, closer to a hiking boot. The strength of the Spanish house lies in its abundant originality, which has drawn its share of criticism. That eccentricity has found its audience all the same.
A FUTURE THAT LOOKS PROMISING
Balenciaga draws on the most influential artists of our time to imagine collections that go beyond what the public expects. For example, Sam Smith fronts the autumn-winter collection and Kristen Stewart is the face of the brand. The house also keeps growing across categories — jewellery, accessories, menswear — with collections full of originality and craft.
Balenciaga knows how to shake up fashion. That is what the house has done to the industry in recent years, and what it intends to keep doing. Between unusual sneakers at the top of the trend and meticulous, forward-looking streetwear, Balenciaga has a fine future ahead of it.
