Air Jordan 1
AIR JORDAN 1, THE EMBLEMATIC SILHOUETTE OF JORDAN BRAND
THE AIR JORDAN 1, A MODEL WITH A STRONG HISTORY
The Air Jordan 1 High… Perhaps the most emblematic silhouette in history (with the exception of the Air Force 1).
A genuine symbol of hip-hop and sporting culture, the history of Michael Jordan's iconic shoe is matched only by its popularity. Backed by enthusiasts and newcomers alike, the Air Jordan 1 is quite simply what you would call a “ must-have ”. And its story does not stop there: Jordan Brand reworks its mythical pair into two versions that are enjoying resounding success today, the Air Jordan 1 Mid and the Air Jordan 1 Low . Wearable with any style of clothing, skirts as well as dresses on the women's side, or slim and wide trousers on the men's side, the Air Jordan 1 has been reworked regularly over the years. A classic with many lives: from the shop Union Los Angeles to Travis Scott, many figures of sneaker culture have earned a version in their name. These shoes have won the hearts of every generation through iconic collections and collaborations. Made for the courts of the NBA, the Air Jordan quickly seized the codes of street culture to become a genuine fashion phenomenon. Ever more striking reinterpretations of the Nike retro trainer keep appearing.
A B-BALL SNEAKER AHEAD OF ITS TIME
The sneaker comes from the basketball courts. Created in 1985 by Peter Moore, a very well-known designer also recognised as the creator of the Equipment range at Adidas, this pair is built on an architecture and a design close to the Air Force 1. It is in fact the very first pair to have been sold by the Air Jordan brand, co-created by Michael Jordan and Nike. Still a long way from the Jumpmanlogo, the period version carries the famous winged ball more commonly called the “Jordan Wings”, which served as a signature. In terms of performance, Nike's Air technology has been in the sole since 1985 to give maximum comfort and support as well as reinforced protection at the ankle — a high-cut design made for the basketball courts. Available in 3 colourways, white, white and red, black and red, this pair looked like something from another planet with its leather upper and a look never seen before at the time.
As an aside, the first red and black version of this silhouette, named Bred , was not allowed on the courts by the NBA. It did not meet the league's dress code. Number 23 therefore received a $5,000 fine for every appearance on court with the Air Jordan 1 on his feet. Nike paid each of the fines and used the controversy to promote the pair. What is less well known is that MJ took some time to accept this version of his signature sneaker: he found that the colours chosen suggested those of the Devil. Leaving that poor first impression behind him, it was with the Air Jordan 1 that “His Airness” won the title of Rookie of the year, took part in his first Slam Dunk contest and gave his team one of the best seasons in its history.
AIR JORDAN 1 HIGH, MID, LOW: THREE CULT VERSIONS
Initially, Jordan's signature sneakers signed Nike and released in 1985 would be available in a High edition with emblematic colourways such as the Chicago, in the red and white of his team, the Chicago Bulls. Made exclusively in South Korea, the Bred, Black Toeand White/Black colourways would follow the launch of the signature collection and would be worn by MJ himself during the 1985/1986 NBA season. Alongside them, several sneakers in different colourways would be unveiled by Nike: the Royal Blue and its royal blue, the Shadow and its shaded grey, the UNC and the Natural Grey , which would get an exclusive reissue in 2021. Although these colourways were not worn on court, they would meet with dazzling success thanks to various advertising campaigns and would establish themselves as genuine must-haves of sneaker culture. A Metallic Pack would be unveiled later and would introduce the Air Jordan 1 Low to the wider public. In 2020, the Metallic collection would be taken up on the Air Jordan 4 from 1989. It would take until the start of the 2000s to see the Retro editions appear, which would reintroduce the OG colourways in a brand new shape, the Air Jordan 1 Mid. It would very quickly be taken up by women and by a younger audience more focused on fashion than sportswear, and would let Jordan Brand bring down the age of its sneaker following.
THE AIR JORDAN 1 AND ITS COLLABORATIONS
From the end of the 2000s, the brand with the Jumpman collaborated with several brands and cultural bodies. The first of them was none other than Levi's in 2008. Ten years later, the denim giant unveiled the Air Jordan 4 Levi's , which would be highly prized by collectors. In 2014, the hype movement arrived. Hiroshi Fujiwara, creator of the label Fragment Design, unveiled the Air Jordan that would change the sneaker world forever. Taking up the colour block of the Black Toe, the Japanese artist replaced the red heel tab with an electric blue that would become the label's signature. The high-top then enjoyed unprecedented popularity and would be seen on the feet of the most influential people in the culture, such as Kanye West. But it was his best friend, Virgil Abloh, who really changed the game with the Air Jordan 1 High Off-White Chicago released in 2017 within the collection The Ten. A genuine tidal wave: the sneakers reworked by the Chicago designer would be the first to be released through a raffle. A year later, in 2018, it was Union L.A, an emblematic Los Angeles shop run by Chris Gibbs, that unveiled two magnificent Air Jordan 1s, the Storm Blue and the Black Toe. After a collaboration with Spider-Man, the creative teams at Jordan teamed up with another figure close to Ye, the Texan artist Travis Scott, on the very famous Air Jordan 1 High Retro Travis Scott and its emblematic reversed swoosh, which would become La Flame's signature from 2019. A Low version followed the release, since reworked in Reverse Mocha in a gourmand brown, in Medium Olive in khaki green, up to the recent Tropical Pink and Shy Pink in an assertive pink, which would complete the long list of Air Jordan 1 Travis Scott. In 2020, Jordan Brand teamed up with the French luxury house Dior for two sneakers in special editions limited to 8,500 pairs worldwide, made in Italy in genuine Italian leather. Thanks to these many collaborations, the Air Jordan 1 keeps renewing itself and manages to appeal to people outside the Jordan movement.
WHICH JORDAN 1 COLOUR TO CHOOSE?
That is the great strength of the silhouette: the brand offers an Air Jordan 1 colour for every style. Purists will go for the OG colourways — the Chicago red, the black and yellow of the Yellow Toe, the University Blue — while those who prefer restraint will opt for an immaculate white, a Wolf Grey or a Black Phantom, shoes that are easy to wear day to day. Softer shades have their classics too: the sand beige of the Sail, the coffee brown of the Mocha, the pine green of the Pine Green, the grape purple of the Court Purple, the mustard yellow of the Yellow Ochre, the coral orange of the Starfish or the powder pink of the latest Travis Scott. An endless colour palette, from the most discreet to the boldest, which explains why these trainers cross the trends without ever going out of style.
