NIKE DUNK LOW: A SILHOUETTE THROUGH THE AGES
THE FOUNDATION OF URBAN CULTURE
Four decades after the creation of the slam-dunk, Nike is just over ten years old and the popularity of basketball is booming. The year 1985 will go down as one of the most pivotal years for Nike Basketball as it marks the birth year of the Nike Dunk.
Designed from the momentum of a young design team, the Nike Dunk basketball shoe was driven by performance innovation that naturally translated into street style. The leather design strengthened Nike’s interest in basketball and its obsession with creating shoes that improve athletes’ performance.
Originally imagined by designer Peter Moore and called College Color High, the Nike Dunk was an artistic mix of different models, a common practice at Nike for 1980s basketball sneakers. The 1985 silhouette was notably inspired by its big sister, the Nike Air Force 1, born three years earlier.
THE NIKE DUNK LOW AND ITS UNPRECEDENTED COLLABORATIONS
As much as its role in the expansion of urban culture, the collaborations on this model have also played their part in the success of the Dunk Low. In fact, the year 2019 ended with a collaboration Nike Off-White. Both brands offer three versions of the Dunk Low model in a deconstructed leather style combining comfort and trendiness. These are the Michigan, University Red, and Pine Green colorways.
The work done on these pairs marks the starting point for unique and never-before-seen collaborations, such as the collaboration between Nike and the American ice cream brand Ben & Jerry’s. The pair was teased several times on social media, building up growing hype around the release. On May 26, 2020, the public discovered the Nike SB Dunk Low Ben & Jerry's Chunky Dunky with premium materials, intricate details, and a style true to the Ben & Jerry's universe. On top of that, a Special Box edition was unveiled, a unique Ben & Jerry’s ice cream tub packaging housing the pair.
After several collaborations alongside Nike, Comme Des Garçons also designed two versions of the Dunk Low in May 2020, in a sleek and very trendy grey/black style. These numerous collaborations are a sign of success for the model, which steps into the spotlight with several colorways and variations...
NIKE DUNK LOW WOMEN AND MEN: STILL AS TRENDY
The model has been a major player on the sneakers scene for several decades. Even today, Nike continues to unveil new colorways and new collaborations. This desire to make 2022 a landmark season for the silhouette is clearly affirmed by the American giant, as demonstrated by the multiple iterations of Nike Dunk High.
Earlier, in December 2019, through the collaboration with Off-White on 3 versions of Dunk Low, the sneakers world redthen rediscovered the model, creating a new buzz. the Swoosh brand heard this loud and clear and decided to create 4 versions inspired by the Nike Dunk High pack: Be True To Your School, originally released in 1985, aiming to return to the roots and the athletic/retro aspect of the silhouette. This brought us the Kentucky and Syracuse colorways, then a few months later the St John’s, Brazil, and Champ Colors.
Thanks to this spectacular comeback, the model established itself as an undisputed must-have. The new releases remain frequent, always varied and original, offering the public a wide range of the best-seller. Remaining legendary, this model has managed to capture two powerful cultures—basketball and skateboarding—to energize the public’s perspective on these sneakers and become a symbol of both domains.
