YEEZY SLIDE, THE REFLECTION OF UNLIMITED CREATIVE FREEDOM
A JOURNEY MARKED IN FASHION
Kanye West does not hide his keen interest in fashion and has a long track record in the field. It all began in 2004 when he reimagined the Air Max 180 in tribute to The College Dropout, a unique and colorful pair. He followed up in 2005 with the Pastelle Clothing project, which ultimately never came to fruition. A few years later, he collaborated with the prestigious fashion house Louis Vuitton to design several models of sneakers. That same year, he released the “Air Yeezy” alongside Nike, which achieved phenomenal success. Kanye West’s desire to carve out a place in the fashion industry intensified when he spent two years with Giuseppe Zanotti, the Italian luxury footwear designer, to learn more about the craft.
It wasn’t until 2015 that the artist unveiled his new project to the general public in collaboration with the German brand Adidas, the Yeezy brand. With the Yeezy Boost 750 Light Brown, as well as the “Glow in the Dark”, he continued to impress sneaker enthusiasts. The model features perforations on the toe box, an inner side zipper, and a gum semi-translucent glow-in-the-dark outsole. The Yeezy 350 V2 are by far the brand’s best-selling sneakers thanks to their simplicity, especially in colorways. But Kanye decided to offer more, to imagine something different and avant-garde, with the recent creation of new slides, named Yeezy Slide.
YEEZY SLIDES, AN INNOVATION THAT DOESN'T SCARE KANYE WEST
Several months after the release of the ultra-futuristic Yeezy 380 or even numerous colorways of Yeezy 500, Kanye West introduces, alongside Adidas, in November 2019 his new slides, the Yeezy Slide , with unique and somewhat avant-garde features. Indeed, the American rapper makes a strong impression and unveils a new partnership with the three-strips brand. This is a minimalist pair in the style of Slide resembling summer slides. Nevertheless, Kanye aims to improve the environmental footprint through this pair, which is partly made from algae as well as EVA foam. It offers a clean aesthetic, unmatched comfort, and a “shark tooth” sole that perfectly completes the design. To date, four colorways are available: Yeezy Slide Bone, Desert Sand, Resin, Earth Brown; enough to satisfy the sneakers community before summer and the return of various slides such as Crocs!
SLIDE YEEZY: ALWAYS MORE ORIGINAL AND INVENTIVE
While craziness and originality may not appeal to everyone, Kanye West is a popular figure who uses his image to freely express his creativity. Being different doesn’t scare him; quite the opposite. Just like his Yeezy 700, he draws from his imagination and memories to amaze the public even today. He uses his status to democratize his innovations worldwide.
In this way, he manages to set trends and make headlines, like with the Yeezy Slide slides, simple “slides” that nevertheless stirred up the press and the fashion world. But for our American multi-billionaire, that’s not enough: why create something simple when you can go bigger? That’s why each of his models is meticulously designed, even to the point of revisiting their composition every six months. As previously mentioned, the Yeezy Slide slides are made from algae sourced from Atlanta, used to replace part of the fossil fuels usually used in the making of sneakers. Kanye West thus stands as an iconic figure in the sneaker business thanks to his prolific creativity in tune with his era.
While adidas and Kanye West ended their collaboration in 2022, the Yeezy models are still sold by the three stripes brand. Just like the Yeezy Slide slides, whose White Salt and Onyx variants have recently resurfaced to the delight of sandal enthusiasts.
