YEEZY SLIDE, THE REFLECTION OF LIMITLESS CREATIVE FREEDOM
A NOTABLE PATH THROUGH FASHION
Kanye West does not hide his sharp taste for fashion and has a long track record in the field. It all starts in 2004 when he reworks the Air Max 180, as a tribute to The College Dropout, a previously unseen pair rich in colour. He follows up in 2005 with the project Pastelle Clothing , which in fact would never see the light of day. A few years later, he collaborates with the illustrious fashion house Louis Vuitton on the making of several sneaker models. The same year, he releases the “Air Yeezy” alongside Nike , which meet with dazzling success. Kanye West's desire to make a place for himself in the fashion industry grows stronger when he decides to spend two years with Giuseppe Zanotti, the Italian luxury shoe designer, to learn more about the field.
We then had to wait until 2015 for the artist to reveal to the wider public his new project in collaboration with the German brand Adidas: the brand Yeezy. With the Yeezy Boost 750 Light Brown, or the “ Glow in the Dark ”, he never stops amazing sneaker fans. He introduces perforations on the toe box, a zip on the inner side and a semi-translucent phosphorescent gum sole. The Yeezy 350 V2 are by far the best-selling sneakers of the brand thanks to their simplicity, notably in colour. But Kanye decides to offer more, to imagine something different and forward-looking, with the recent creation of new sliders, named Yeezy Slide.
YEEZY SLIDES, AN INNOVATION THAT DOES NOT FRIGHTEN KANYE WEST
Several months after the release of the very futuristic Yeezy 380 and of the many colourways of the Yeezy 500, Kanye West presents, alongside Adidas, in November 2019 , his new sandals, the Yeezy Slide, with singular and somewhat forward-looking features. The American rapper hits hard and offers a new partnership with the brand with the three stripes. It is a minimalist pair in the Slide style, close to a summer slider. Even so, Kanye seeks to improve the environmental footprint through this pair, made in part from algae as well as EVA foam. It offers a clean look, unmatched comfort and a “shark tooth” sole that rounds off the design beautifully. To date, four colours are available: Yeezy Slide Bone, Desert Sand, Resin, Earth Brown ; enough to satisfy the sneaker community before the summer and the return of the various sliders such as Crocs .
YEEZY SLIDER: BEING EVER MORE ORIGINAL AND INVENTIVE
While madness and originality do not please everyone, Kanye West is a popular figure who uses his image to give free rein to his creativity. Being different does not frighten him; quite the opposite. As with his Yeezy 700, he draws on his imagination and his memories to astonish the public to this day. He uses his standing to spread his innovations across the world.
He thus manages to launch trends and to get himself talked about, as with the Yeezy Slide, simple “sliders” that nevertheless stirred up the press and the world of fashion. But for our American multibillionaire, more is needed: why create something simple when you can go bigger? That is why each of his models is extremely worked on, to the point of reviewing their composition every 6 months. As mentioned earlier, the Yeezy Slide sliders are made from algae sourced inAtlanta, used to replace part of the fossil fuels usually used in making sneakers. Kanye West is therefore an emblematic figure for the sneaker business , thanks to his abundant creativity, in step with his times.
While adidas and Kanye West ended their collaboration in 2022, Yeezy models are still sold by the brand with the three stripes. As with the Yeezy Slide sliders, whose White Salt and Onyx versions have lately come back, to the delight of sandal fans.
