ON RUNNING, THE SWISS SHOE BORN FROM A GARDEN HOSE
OLIVIER BERNHARD, DAVID ALLEMANN AND CASPAR COPPETTI FOUND IN ZURICH IN 2010
The story ofOn begins with a prototype tinkered. Olivier Bernhard, six-time Ironman winner, is looking for a shoe that cushions vertical landing without slowing down propulsion. A Zurich engineer made one by gluing sections of garden hose cut into rings under a sole. It works. Bernhard joined forces with two friends, David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti, and they founded On in Zurich in 2010. The rings become Clouds, hollow foam cells that crush on impact then lock to push forward: CloudTec technology.
The sequel is one of the fastest growing in athletic footwear history. Roger Federer enters the capital in 2019 and co-signs a tennis line; the brand will go public in New York in 2021. And the design — sole with visible holes, clean lines, sober colors — makes On a brand that can be worn both in the city and on the run, right up to the collaboration with Loewe, which brought the Cloudtilt into the Parisian fashion shows.
CLOUDMONSTER, CLOUDNOVA, CLOUDTILT, CLOUDULTRA: THE MODELS
The Cloudmonster is the most cushioned in the road range: oversized Clouds, a Speedboard plate, a rolling sole — for long outings and recovery. The Cloudnova is the brand's lifestyle shoe, designed for the whole day rather than for the clock. The Cloudtilt, light and flexible, is the one that Loewe chose, and the most worn in town. The Cloudultra goes on the trails: notched sole, protection, quick lacing for ultra-trail.
HOW TO CHOOSE AND WEAR ON
To run, start from the use: the Cloudmonster for cushioning and distance, the Cloudultra for the trail. For the city, the Cloudnova and the Cloudtilt, which can be worn with technical pants, sports shorts or straight jeans. Fits just right in length and narrow at the forefoot; If in doubt, take a half size larger.
ON RUNNING IN OUR SELECTION
In our department shoes from running, On Running is the Swiss answer to Hoka : same idea of spectacular cushioning become aesthetic, but through the alveolus rather than through the thickness.
