ASICS GEL-NYC, THREE ARCHIVES RUNNING ASSEMBLED INTO ONE SNEAKER
ANGELO BAQUE DESIGNS THE GEL-NYC FOR ASICS IN 2023
The Gel-NYC is not a reissue. It’s an assembly. In January 2023, at Paris Fashion Week, ASICS unveils a brand-new silhouette created with Angelo Baque, founder of the New York label Awake NY and former brand director at Supreme. The first two colorways release under the Awake name; the general-release version follows on March 3, 2023 at €149. Within a few months, the Gel-NYC becomes the Kobe brand’s second best-selling pair — a Y2K UFO that didn’t exist in the archives and that everyone thought they already knew.
The name says it all: New York DNA applied to an early-2000s running shoe, designed to be worn from morning to night, not for running. Baque built his pair like a collage of three models. The upper borrows from the Gel-Nimbus 3 from 2001, with its mesh and suede overlays; the panels and color hits come from the Gel-MC Plus V, from the same year; the sole is taken from the Gel-Cumulus 16 from 2014, with its visible GEL cushioning in the heel, its FluidRide foam, and its Guidance Line. Retro in look, modern underfoot — the ASICS Sportstyle formula.
GEL-NYC, GEL-NYC 2.0, RGD, UTILITY: THE VERSIONS
The original Gel-NYC remains the broadest offering in our ASICS selection, and its neutral colorways are the ones that move the most: Graphite Grey Black, Cream Oyster Grey, Ivory Forest Night, Cream Cement Grey, White Blue Coast, Black. Alongside them are seasonal shades — Brown Storm Black Coffee, Loden Green Graphite Grey, Mineral Beige, Concrete Barely Rose — and the special editions: the Gel-NYC Yankees in the club’s colors, and the Kicki Yang Zhang “Guohua,” signed by the Berlin-based artist in January 2026.
The Gel-NYC 2.0, launched in 2025 with HAL Studios, keeps the silhouette and changes the midsole: more foam, noticeably plusher cushioning from the very first wear — those who own both say so. In Cream or Graphite Grey Black, it’s the version to choose for comfort. The Gel-NYC RGD swaps suede for smooth synthetic leather, adds heel pull tabs and a denser mesh, for a tougher, more winter-ready look. The Gel-NYC Utility pushes the same aesthetic further on the outdoor side.
HOW DOES THE GEL-NYC FIT?
Like most ASICS models, it fits true to size in length but snug in instep height and forefoot width — that's the legacy of the Nimbus 3. Standard feet: your usual size. Wide feet, or thick socks: go up half a size. The 2.0, with more padding, is easier to slip on than the first version. Give it around ten wears for the suede to break in.
HOW TO WEAR THE GEL-NYC
It's made for wider-leg bottoms — straight jeans, cargos, joggers that stack over the heel — and for the grey, cream, and earth-tone palettes found across most of its colorways. With slim pants, the sole looks disproportionate. In our sneakers section, it's the entry point into 2000s retro-running ASICS: chunkier than the Gel-Kayano 14, more technical than the Gel-1130, and the only one of the three that was born in 2023 rather than reissued. Compared with the New Balance 2002R, its American counterpart, it leans into mesh and color where the 2002R leans into suede and grey.
