Nike Air Max 1
NIKE AIR MAX 1: A REVOLUTIONARY SILHOUETTE.
NIKE AIR MAX 1: THE STORY OF AN ICON.
In 1986, Nike was going through a brief period of decline and wanted to modernize its product catalog. The Beaverton brand therefore called on Tinker Hatfield, Footwear Designer and architect by training, to design the model that would relaunch Phil Knight's company. To create this design, Tinker was inspired by the Centre Georges Pompidou, which he saw during a trip to Paris. The designer was amazed by the air bubbles clustered on the exterior structure of the building and decided to reproduce this on his new model. This is how the Nike Air Max 1 OG Red was born, the first pair of Nike to feature a visible air bubble in the midsole. The Air Max technology was also used on several other designs that Mr. Hatfield created for the Air Jordan line, such as the Air Jordan 3 and the Air Jordan 4.
THE BIRTH OF A CULT MODEL AIR MAX 1.
Released for the very first time on March 26, 1987, the pair met with immediate international success and quickly established itself as the trendsetting model par excellence! Every year, on March 26, Nike celebrates the anniversary of the silhouette with "Air Max Day", a special day that sees the creation of new pairs and special editions such as the Air Max 1 Evolutions of Icons that revisit the iconic models of the range. In 1990, Tinker Hatfield introduces us to the Air Max 90. The little sister of the Air Max 1 features a more aggressive silhouette and a larger air bubble ! Its OG colorway is the Air Max 90 Infrared. A few years later, in 1995, Sergio Lozano would introduce the Air Max 95 inspired by human anatomy. Two years later, Christian Tresser drew inspiration from Japanese high-speed trains for the design of the iconic Air Max 97. In a constant state of innovation, the air bubble line expanded with the Air Max 98, marking the return of Sergio Lozano at the helm.
ICONIC AIR MAX 1 COLLABORATIONS : PATTA, CLOT, SEAN WOTHERSPOON, PARRA, TRAVIS SCOTT.
The Air Max 1 is one of the few sneakers models to have enjoyed such longevity. A true icon of pop culture and the streetwear movement, several entities have had the opportunity to collaborate with Nike on the silhouette, creating original limited edition models. One of its most famous collaborators is none other than the legendary shop Patta. Based in Amsterdam, the store is behind some of the most beautiful packs for the model, such as the 5th Anniv Pack from 2009/2010 with the legendary Air Max 1 Chlorophyll. More recently, in 2021, the Dutch label released the "The Wave" pack, made up of four iterations: the Monarch, the Noise Aqua, the Rush Maroon, and the Black Grey. Some artists have also reimagined the model, such as Parra, Edison Chen and his label Clot, or even Sean Wotherspoon. In 2022, it was the charismatic Travis Scott's turn to reinvent the design from Tinker Hatfield with the Baroque Brown and the Saturn Gold!
