AIR JORDAN 1, THE EMBLEMATIC SILHOUETTE OF JORDAN BRAND
THE AIR JORDAN 1, A MODEL WITH A STRONG HISTORY
The Air Jordan 1 High… Perhaps the most iconic silhouette in history (with the exception of the Air Force 1).
A true symbol of hip-hop and sports culture, the story of Michael Jordan's iconic shoe is matched only by its popularity. Loved by both enthusiasts and newcomers alike, the Air Jordan 1 is quite simply what you call a must-have. And its story doesn't stop there: Jordan Brand has released its legendary pair in two versions that are now enjoying resounding success: the Air Jordan 1 Mid and the Air Jordan 1 Low! Wearable with every style of clothing, from skirts and dresses for women to slim-fit and loose pants for men, the Air Jordan 1 has been regularly reissued over the years. A classic with many lives, from the Union Los Angeles boutique to Travis Scott, many key players in sneakers culture have been given their own version! These shoes have won over every generation through iconic collections and collaborations. Originally intended for NBA courts, the Air Jordan quickly embraced the codes of "street culture" to become a true fashion phenomenon. We keep seeing ever more striking reinterpretations of Nike's retro sneaker.
A B-BALL SNEAKER AHEAD OF ITS TIME
The sneaker originated on the basketball courts. Created in 1985 by Peter Moore, the very famous designer also known for creating the Equipment line for Adidas, this pair features an architecture and a design close to the Air Force 1. It was also the very first pair to be marketed by the Air Jordan brand, co-created by Michael Jordan and Nike. Still a long way from the Jumpman logo, the original version featured the famous winged basketball more commonly known as the "Jordan Wings," which served as its signature. In terms of performance, the Air technology by Nike has equipped the sole since 1985 to deliver maximum comfort and support as well as enhanced ankle protection — a design cut designed for basketball courts. Released in 3 colorways — white, white and red, black and red — this pair appeared like a UFO with its leather upper and a look never seen before at the time.
As a side note, the first red and black version named Bred of this silhouette was not allowed on NBA courts. It did not comply with the league's dress code. Number 23 was therefore fined $5,000 for every appearance wearing the Air Jordan 1 on court. Nike paid each fine and used the controversy to promote the pair. What is less well known is that MJ took some time before accepting this version of his signature sneaker: he felt the chosen colors evoked those of the Devil… Leaving that bad first impression behind, it was in the Air Jordan 1 that “His Airness” won the Rookie of the Year title, took part in his first Slam Dunk contest, and gave his team one of the best seasons in its history!
AIR JORDAN 1 HIGH, MID, LOW: THREE CULT COLORWAYS
Initially, the signature sneakers of Jordan by Nike released in 1985 would be available in High edition with iconic colorways such as the Chicago, in the red and white colors of his team: the Chicago Bulls. Manufactured exclusively in South Korea, the Bred, Black Toe, White/Black colorways would follow the launch cycle of the signature collection and would be worn by MJ himself during the 1985/1986 NBA season. At the same time, several sneakers in different colorways would be unveiled by Nike: the Royal Blue and its royal blue, the Shadow and its shadow grey, the UNC and the Natural Grey, which would receive an exclusive reissue in 2021. Although these colorways were not worn on court, they would enjoy meteoric success thanks to various advertising campaigns and would establish themselves as true must-haves of sneakers culture. A Metallic Pack would later be unveiled and would introduce the Air Jordan 1 Low to the general public. In 2020, the Metallic collection was revisited on the Air Jordan 4 from 1989. It would take until the early 2000s to see the Retro editions appear, reintroducing the OG colorways in a whole new shape, the Air Jordan 1 Mid. It was quickly embraced by women and a younger, more fashion-driven audience than sportswear, allowing Jordan Brand to rejuvenate its sneakers audience.
THE AIR JORDAN 1 AND ITS COLLABORATIONS
From the late 2000s onward, the Jumpman brand collaborated with several brands and cultural entities. The first of them was none other than Levi's in 2008. 10 years later, the denim giant unveiled the Air Jordan 4 Levi's which would become highly sought after by collectors. In 2014, the hype movement arrived. Hiroshi Fujiwara, creator of the Fragment Design label, unveiled the Air Jordan to us, which would revolutionize the world of the sneakers forever. Taking up the color-blocking of the Black Toe, the Japanese artist replaced the red heel tab with an electric blue one that would become the label's signature. The high-top then reached unprecedented popularity and was seen on the feet of the most influential figures in the culture, such as Kanye West. But it was the latter's best friend, Virgil Abloh, who would truly change the game with the Air Jordan 1 High Off-White Chicago released in 2017 as part of the The Ten collection. A true tidal wave, the sneakers revisited by the creator of Chicago would be the first to be released via raffle! A year later, in 2018, it was Union L.A, an iconic Los Angeles shop run by Chris Gibbs, that unveiled two magnificent Air Jordan 1, the Storm Blue and the Black Toe. After a collaboration with Spider-Man, the creative teams at Jordan teamed up with another close associate of Ye, the Texan artist Travis Scott, on the very famous Air Jordan 1 High Retro Travis Scott and its iconic reverse Swoosh, which would become the signature of the Flame starting in 2019. A Low version followed the release, since adapted into Reverse Mocha with a rich brown, Medium Olive in khaki green, all the way to the recent Tropical Pink and Shy Pink with their bold rose hue, rounding out the long list of Air Jordan 1 Travis Scott. In 2020, Jordan Brand teamed up with the French luxury house Dior for two sneakers in special limited editions of 8,500 pairs worldwide, crafted in Italy from genuine Italian leather. Thanks to these numerous collaborations, the Air Jordan 1 keeps reinventing itself and manages to appeal even to people outside the Jordan movement.
WHICH COLOR OF JORDAN 1 SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
That's the silhouette's great strength: the brand offers a Air Jordan 1 colorway for every style. Purists will gravitate toward the OG colorways — the Chicago red, the black and yellow of the Yellow Toe, the University Blue blue — while fans of understated style will go for immaculate white, Wolf Grey gray, or Black Phantom black — easy shoes to wear every day. Softer shades have their classics too: the sandy beige of the Sail, the coffee-brown of the Mocha, the pine green of the Pine Green, the grape purple of the Court Purple, the mustard yellow of the Yellow Ochre, the coral orange of the Starfish, or the powdery rose of the latest Travis Scott. An endless color palette, from the most understated to the boldest, which explains why these sneakers move through trends without ever going out of style.
