New Balance
NEW BALANCE, AN AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY
THE BRAND'S HISTORY: A GUARANTEE OF QUALITY AND COMFORT
New Balance, one of the very first sneakers brands, was founded in Massachusetts in 1906, well before Puma, Nike, or Adidas, under the original name The New Balance Arch Company. A shoemaker by trade, William J. Riley, the brand's founder, set out to help people suffering from foot problems. The first activity of New Balance was thus the creation of shoes with orthopedic soles designed to provide better arch support. Fun fact: the name “New Balance” was directly inspired by the shape of chicken feet. By observing them, William Riley realized that their three points of contact provided perfect balance and force distribution, which was extremely helpful to him in designing his orthopedic soles.
The custom manufacturing applied to the famous orthopedic soles naturally carried over into the development of the brand's future shoes. That’s why special attention is paid to the technologies used in the soles. Always with comfort in mind, different widths are offered depending on the available sizes of certain sneaker models. As for the materials, they are often made from premium sources such as genuine pigskin leather, and all pairs from the brand are handmade.
A NEW REFERENCE IN THE WORLD OF RUNNING
Later on, William Riley passed his company on to his daughter, an act that would take the American brand in a whole new direction. In fact, it was in 1961 that New Balance released its first pair of running shoes: the New Balance Trackster, which was the first performance model ever offered in multiple widths. The rise of sports and the democratization of running in the 1960s was a real marketing opportunity for the brand, which gradually began to establish itself in this sector, moving away from orthopedic soles, though not entirely. Indeed, by offering multiple widths on the New Balance Trackster, the brand positioned itself as a specialist in footwear, and especially in comfort, thanks to William Riley's legacy and his deep expertise in orthopedics.
In the years that followed, the popularity of New Balance reached its peak, notably thanks to the New York Marathon. It will be on the feet of almost all its participants and will become known worldwide.
NEW BALANCE 9060
Among the latest silhouettes designed by the creative teams at NB, the New Balance 9060 embodies the perfect fusion of style and performance. This sneaker generally features an upper combining mesh and suede, but draws its originality from its futuristic look provided by its thick REVlite sole. Quickly appreciated by fans of the Boston brand, the 9060 has been at the center of collaborations with Bricks & Wood, Joe Freshgoods, and Bodega.
NEW BALANCE 550
Initially released in 1989, the New Balance 550 features a smooth, soft leather upper and perforated mesh set on a premium rubber sole. The silhouette was originally intended for basketball courts but failed to establish itself against competing sneaker models such as the Air Jordan 4, which were more popular with players at the time. It wasn't until 2020 and the collaboration with the Aimé Léon Dore label by Teddy Santis that the retro model found its audience. Accessible, high-quality, and comfortable, the vintage silhouette has seen many successful iterations, such as the Red and Green colorways.
New Balance 1906R
Created in 2009, the NB 1906 made its comeback in 2022 in a revamped version inspired by one of the trendiest pairs of the moment, the 2002R. The New Balance 1906R sports a mesh base, with leather details and TPU inserts that add durability. The overall look is both retro and futuristic, setting it apart. Trendy, this model has also been the result of collabs with GANNI, Aimé Leon Dore, thisisneverthat, and Auralee.
NEW BALANCE 2002R
The New Balance 2002R, originally released in 2010, was a pair of shoes exclusively for Made In USA. Unveiled through exclusive drops, the lowtop was presented as the perfect blend of luxury and running. But it was only 10 years later, in 2020, that the model achieved international success with the collaboration 2002R Peace Be The Journey by the American designer Salehe Bembury. Its premium materials, comfort, and accessible price instantly win over fans of sneakers around the world. In 2021 , The equipment manufacturer Boston teams up with Chinese designer Yue Wu to create the Redefined Future pack, commonly known as Protection Pack, which introduces us to the Rain Cloud, Sea Salt, and Phantom colorways.
New Balance 530
A classic from New Balance since its release in the early 90s, the New Balance 530 is one of the brand's most well-known sneakers from Boston. Originally designed for running, it was reinvented in 2015 with new, more modern and durable materials to meet the latest sneakers trends. It stands out for its simplicity and consistently effective colorways, making it the perfect sneaker for both sports and everyday life.
COLLABORATIONS REFLECTING THE BRAND'S STRONG VALUES
Thanks to its history and focus on comfort and performance, New Balance embodies values of excellence, quality, and innovation. Today, worn by both athletes and streetwear fans, New Balance has leveraged its expertise in running to open up to the sneakers market, especially through its various collaborations with different brands.
For example, there have been recent sneakers collaborations with the label JJJJound, designer Joe Freshgoods, and the New York brand Aime Léon Dore. All these models are available for men and women on Wethenew.
Unlike Nike or Adidas, which rely on ambassadors to promote their models, New Balance is more focused on the sneaker itself, emphasizing design and the technical features of the shoes. By combining the use of premium materials, successful color mixes, and adapting trends to its models, New Balance is now a brand rooted in the sneakers community: available for men and women!
More recently, the brand has brought back to the spotlight many colorways of the New Balance 204L, heavily inspired by the running shoes from the 2000s!
