Birkenstock: the sandal that became a trend
Founded in 1774, Birkenstock is a German brand specialising in artisanal shoemaking with comfort above all. Almost 250 yearsold, this brand from Neustadt waited many years before reaching the top of the trend, but that is now the case.
The German brand was first intended for hospital staff, before finding its way onto the feet of the wider public from the 1990s. These sandals, first an icon for countless tourists, went on to win over even the sharpest fashion crowd.
Birkenstock Boston
The clog par excellence, the Birkenstock Boston focuses on comfort while offering a highly recognisable design with its pin-buckle strap that lets you adjust the fit. Originally the Boston was designed for certain professions, and was notably worn in German medical settings. Over the years the Birkenstock Boston has reinvented itself and diversified, with new colours and a reworked design featuring a shearling lining that makes it a must-have whatever the season. On the manufacturing side, Birkenstock makes a point of using materials of natural origin. That is why the Birkenstock Boston is built from natural cork granules, natural latex milk, jute and suede leather. Very much in demand, the Birkenstock Arizona has also moved into collaborations. It was notably reworked by the haute couture house Dior , which put it on show at several runway presentations.
Birkenstock Arizona
The most emblematic silhouette of the German brand, the Birkenstock Arizona is recognisable at a glance. As it celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2023, this sandal is known the world over. Its two legendary straps let it adapt to every foot thanks to pin buckles. The core of the sole combines latex and cork for comfort and support, even on long walks. The whole Birkenstock Arizona is made from materials of natural origin such as jute, suede leather, cork and latex milk. Like the Boston, the Arizona has been reinvented by several brands and designers, among them Stussy, Rick Owens, and also Valentino and Hermès. Sandals then saw their standing rise with the wider public too, won over in particular by the Yeezy Slide.

Birkenstock had to wait several decades but finally made its mark everywhere it went. Today the German brand's various silhouettes are among the most sought-after pieces around.
