Acne Studios
ACNE STUDIOS, THE AMBITION TO CREATE NEW EXPRESSIONS
A CREATIVE COLLECTIVE BEFORE BECOMING A FASHION HOUSE
Behind those four letters lies a phrase few customers know: Ambition to Create Novel Expressions. The acronym also had an earlier, more prosaic life — Associated Computer Nerd Enterprises — inherited from the digital graphic design scene the group came out of.
Because in 1996 in Stockholm, Jonny Johansson and three partners did not found a clothing brand. They created a multidisciplinary collective involved in graphic design, design, film, production, and advertising. Johansson explained it to Numéro: a group bound by mutual admiration, wanting to explore several creative fields the way contemporary artists move from one medium to another. Clothing was not the original plan; it imposed itself naturally — it is, in his words, « the common glue that binds all creative disciplines together ».
ONE HUNDRED JEANS WITH RED STITCHING
The founding moment dates back to 1997 and can be summed up in one number. Johansson designed one hundred raw denim jeans with red stitching and gave them to people close to him. At a time when bootcut reigned supreme, a straight leg highlighted by a scarlet thread stood out enough for Wallpaper* and Vogue Paris to pick it up. A telling detail: his friends initially refused to wear them, finding the aesthetic impossible to read.
Acne Jeans was officially launched in 1998, with a premium positioning that ran counter to the American streetwear dominating the market at the time. It was not until 2006 that Acne Studios became an independent company, separated from Acne Film, Acne Advertising, and Acne Digital, and shortly after launched its e-commerce site.
THE FACE MOTIF AND THE BLÅ KONST LINE
The most recognizable logo in contemporary fashion is a doodle. Johansson sketched it during a runway show, and in 2017 this little face became the Face collection — a bestseller now found on sweatshirts, wool scarves, and t-shirts. The designer explains it through the Swedish word lagom: neither too happy nor too sad, just right.
Two dates frame this period. In 2018, the house separated its denim into a dedicated line, Blå Konst — « blue art ». In 2019, it moved its headquarters to Floragatan 13, the former headquarters of the Swedish Communist Party, converted into a brutalist showcase.
MINIMALISM CHARGED WITH EMOTION
The aesthetic can be summed up in one formula: lines that seem simple, yet where every detail disrupts the reading. A shifted seam, a dense fabric, a deliberately dissonant hem. It’s not the Scandinavian coldness too hastily attributed to the Swedish brand, but a discreet strangeness — oversized knitwear, worked leather, a jacket with shoulders that drop one centimeter too low, on purpose.
This collective mindset goes far beyond the wardrobe: the house publishes Acne Paper, releases books, and, with Frédéric Malle, created a fragrance composed by Suzy Le Helley. A cross-disciplinary approach that Acne Studios shares with Études Studio on the Paris side, or with Arte in Antwerp.
