Air Jordan
AIR JORDAN BRAND MORE THAN A BRAND, A REFERENCE
MICHAEL JORDAN, THE MOST TALENTED BASKETBALL PLAYER OF ALL TIME
Jordan, an iconic name for an emblematic brand. To truly understand what the brand represents, you have to know the man behind its founding: Michael Jordan. Perhaps the most famous athlete in the world, the one nicknamed “The G.O.A.T” is one of the most admired sports figures in the history of basketball, but also in sports in general! In 1984, still at the beginning of what would become a truly remarkable career, he signed a sponsorship deal with the equipment manufacturer Nike. Fun fact: the brand with the Swoosh was not the player’s first choice. Wearing Converse during his college years, and more specifically the Chuck Taylor 70 model, Michael Jordan wanted to be sponsored by the star-branded company... Not considering him “promising enough,” they turned him down. Nike then made an offer to the young athlete, which he declined, before trying his luck with the long-time competitor: Adidas. Not satisfied with the German brand’s offer, he finally accepted that of the Beaverton-based brand. Nike indeed came back with a financial offer the future Hall of Famer couldn’t refuse: 2.5 million dollars over 5 years as well as the creation of a clothing line in his image and the payment of royalties for every item sold.
AIR JORDAN 1, AIR JORDAN 3, JORDAN 4, ICONIC SILHOUETTES
In 1985, the first silhouette from this partnership was launched, the Air Jordan 1. It immediately saw resounding commercial success, fueled by the controversy the model created on the court: every time MJ wore the pair during a game, he received a $5,000 fine for violating the NBA dress code. A fine that Nike paid without issue in light of the pair’s popularity.
A second Air Jordan model was released a year later, but its success was more mixed, notably due to a price that was too high resulting from handmade production in Italy. For the Air Jordan 3 , it’s Tinker Hatfield who takes over the design of the pair following the failure of the Air Jordan 2 and Michael Jordan’s desire to leave. At Nike since 1981, the footwear designer behind the Air Max 1 is given one of the most important missions: to convince the rising star of the Chicago Bulls to continue his partnership with the Beaverton-based brand. The third edition of Michael Jordan’s signature model at Nike was released in 1987 and quickly won over fans, allowing this collaboration to bounce back thanks to the ideas of the new designer in charge of the project. He then imagined some of the most iconic pairs in the collection, such as the Air Jordan 5 and the Air Jordan 6...
A true success, the deal then took a completely different turn a few years later as the athlete created his own brand at Nike in 1997. This event marked the history of sports, making him the highest-paid athlete in the world. This is how Air Jordan was born, along with its logo, the Jumpman. More than 100 models would emerge from this partnership. The brand achieved unprecedented global recognition, ultimately becoming THE reference in sports equipment. As for the rest… The rest is history! More recently, the Jumpman brand has built on the success of several silhouettes to shape its image. We’ve seen an explosion of colorways for its ultra-trendy Air Jordan 1 Mid, several reissues of the iconic Air Jordan 1 High as well as numerous editions of the Air Jordan 1 Low. Other silhouettes that have received less attention, like the Air Jordan 11 and the Air Jordan 4 have also been reimagined in various iterations over the past few years and continue to gain in popularity.
OFF-WHITE, TRAVIS SCOTT, KAWS, UNIQUE COLLABORATIONS
Today, among the most sought-after sneakers brands, Jordan Brand does not hesitate to offer its models through high-profile partnerships. For example, the Air Jordan 1 Retro High in collaboration with the late Virgil Abloh and Off-White, with Dior or even the one from the movie Spider-Man, paying tribute to the legendary Marvel hero. For several years, the brand of “His Airness” has also sponsored basketball players and their teams, reaching beyond borders. It invests in films, artists, and has also had a partnership with PSG since 2018. Air Jordan thus continues to deeply embed itself in urban culture. We can also mention the now legendary collaboration with the Houston rapper, Travis Scott. The artist notably reimagined the iconic Air Jordan 1 in several versions, making the reverse swoosh his signature. More than just a brand, Jordan is now a universal symbol.
