Air Jordan 1 Low
AIR JORDAN 1 LOW: THE ICONIC MODEL IN LOW VERSION
THE STORY OF THIS NIKE THAT BEGAN IN 1985
A true symbol of hip-hop and sports culture, the history of this pair is as complex as it is full of details. Praised both by enthusiasts and long-time collectors, the Air Jordan 1 is simply considered a must-have in the sneaker world. This silhouette, originally designed for the basketball court, was created in 1985 by Peter Moore, the famous designer who also created the Nike Dunk the same year. Featuring a construction and design similar to the Air Force 1, it was actually the very first pair to be released by the brand Air Jordan co-created by Michael Jordan and Nike. It should be noted, however, that Michael Jordan was equipped for a few months with the Nike Air Ship, while the designers at Nike took the time to design the Air Jordan 1 that we know today. Just like the original model, you can find the famous winged ball, more commonly known as the "Jordan Wings", which served as a signature.
In terms of performance, the Air technology from Nike has equipped the sole since 1985 to provide maximum comfort and support, as well as enhanced ankle protection. As a fun fact, the first version of this silhouette, named Bred, in addition to being banned from the courts by the NBA, was not really to MJ's liking, as he felt the chosen colors were quite loaded: "They make me think of the devil," he once said.
A RANGE OF AIR JORDAN 1 LOW FOR WOMEN AND MEN
While the model initially released in 1985 was a rather high-top version, the brand with the Jumpman didn't stop at not resting on its laurels and sought to go further in developing two complementary models. An intermediate version nicknamed Air Jordan 1 Mid would also be released in the early 2000s. Well known to all, the Air Jordan 1 High features a high-top construction around the ankle. It has seen a multitude of retro reissues ever since its launch year. How could we not mention the Air Jordan 1 Retro High Royal Toe or the Air Jordan 1 High Shattered Backboards 3.0 which have made an impact in recent months.
The Air Jordan 1 Mid, released to the public to offer a different style and as a continuation of the OG model, uses the same design but features a lower cut than its big sister, with a collar that stops at mid-ankle. This version has been thrust into the spotlight since late 2019, especially thanks to the Fearless pack and the highly popular AJ1 Mid Maison Chateau Rouge. A model that is gaining in popularity and sees releases featuring the colorways from 1985.
The Air Jordan 1 Low, on the other hand, opts for a low-cut shape, ideal for summer days or simply for those who like to switch things up in terms of sneakers. It’s clearly a success for Jordan, who has managed to capture its entire history in different versions of the model, offering a wide range of choices for fans of the Air Jordan 1 depending on their preferences, the season, and their mood.
AIR JORDAN 1 LOW: A MODEL THAT'S GAINING POPULARITY
Since the rise of retro versions in the 2000s, Jordan had been largely focused on releasing its High model, considered the premium model in its lineup. Generally, you could find the Mid and Low versions widely available in shopping malls, as these models were positioned more as entry-level options for the Jordan 1 and as secondary models. But in recent years, the Jordan Brand has truly shifted gears and made efforts to diversify its models. We’re seeing more and more colorways on the Air Jordan 3 or even the true revelation of recent years with the Air Jordan 4. The numbers back this up: in 2016, out of 40 models released, no AJ1 Mid was part of the collection and only 4 were AJ1 Low. On the other hand, in 2019, there were 35 Mid and 17 Low among the 80 models launched.
Thanks to this shift led by Nike & Jordan, we have recently seen more limited editions of the Air Jordan 1 Low, including the AJ1 Low Paris and the AJ1 Retro low Travis Scott. In addition, the retro colorways are also available in the low version, including the Royal Toe, Shattered Backboard and the UNC versions. A momentum highly appreciated by the sneakers community, who enjoy a very wide selection of colors, shapes, and design available to them!
