AIR JORDAN 6: THE SNEAKER OF MICHAEL JORDAN'S FIRST TITLE
AIR JORDAN 6: ITS STORY
Unveiled in 1991, the Air Jordan 6 was designed by the legendary Tinker Hatfield. This is the designer behind the Air Jordan designs from the 3 to the XV. It was by wearing the Air Jordan 6, six years after the release of the Air Jordan 1, that Michael Jordan won his first NBA Championship and Finals MVP, wearing the colors of the Chicago Bulls against Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers.
At launch, the Air Jordan 6 was available in five different colorways, led by the iconic White Infrared and Black Infrared.
A SNEAKERS NIKE WITH A CLEAN DESIGN
With the goal of always pushing further and designing the best possible pair for His Airness, Tinker Hatfield doubled down on the Air Jordan 6. Far from, for example, the classic design of the Air Jordan 1 Mid and the Air Jordan 1 High.
It was at the request of It was Michael Jordan himself who set out to create a cleaner model, both in terms of style and materials. For MJ, the reference was the Italian shoe constructed from a single piece and single material. To meet the needs of the American superstar, the Oregon-born designer made the Air Jordan 6 a better finished and lighter model. Instead of leather, suede, a synthetic leather, was used. The panels even form a “23,” a nod to Michael Jordan’s number. Due to the loss of breathability caused by this suede, the one who started at Nike by designing the Air Jordan 3 chose to add perforations to a large part of the model.
Several parts are highly detailed, such as the heeltab and the tongue. For the first time, a Air Jordan shoe features a heeltab. Located at the back of the sneaker, this small strap makes lacing faster and more convenient. This piece was actually inspired by the Spoiler of the Porsche Michael Jordan. This strap would later be redesigned but ultimately forgotten starting from the Air Jordan 11.
Designed in integrated neoprene, the tongue was also particularly well crafted. It features two openings that provide the foot with better support and improved breathability. On the other hand, the Air Jordan 6 is the last pair to feature a visible air bubble on the midsole.
COLLABORATIONS OF THE JORDAN 6
Surely less popular now than some other basketball models from the brand, the Air Jordan 6 has nevertheless had its fair share of collaborations. For its first joint project, the AJ6 collaborated with young patients through the Doernbecher program in 2009.
Afterwards, the Jumpman highlighted the Air Jordan 6 through collaborations with Jordan Motorsports, Macklemore, the manga Slam Dunk, and Gatorade between 2010 and 2017.
More recently, Jordan Brand worked on its model number 6 with Aleali May (Spring 2019), PSG (Summer 2019), and Levi’s in 2020. But the most high-profile collaboration for the Air Jordan 6 was with American rapper Travis Scott in 2019, one year after the Air Jordan 4. Released in two colorways, the British Khaki and the Medium Olive, this Air Jordan 6 stands out for its small snap pockets on the parts laterals.
JORDAN 6 RETRO
Nine years after its first release in 1991, the Air Jordan 6 experienced a revival with the launch of the first Retro models in 2000. Later, in 2002, the Air Jordan 6 made its comeback in a low top version.
