Travis Scott Cactus Jack
TRAVIS SCOTT NIKE, THE CACTUS JACK COLLAB
THE STORY OF RAPPER TRAVIS SCOTT
Travis Scott was born in 1992 in Houston, the capital of Texas in the United States. With a grandfather who was a jazz composer and a father who was a musician, young Travis developed a passion for music at a very early age. He learned to play the drums and piano before later getting into electronic music. From Björk to the Sex Pistols, he quickly opened himself up to a wide range of influences. At 16, Travis began rapping, following in the footsteps of his idols Kid Cudi and Kanye West. After that, Jacques Webster, his real name, took on the pseudonym Travis Scott in reference to his favorite uncle. After two years of studies, he left university to dedicate himself entirely to his passion. A risky bet that paid off, as in 2012 he was discovered by rapper TI, who launched his career.
THE JOURNEY OF CACTUS JACK: FROM THE SPARK TO THE FLAME
As a young artist, Travis Scott quickly stepped into the spotlight thanks to TI and his label. After a few early tracks, the young Texan was contacted by none other than Kanye West. Becoming his mentor, Yeezus helped him produce his first EP "Owl Pharaoh" in 2013. He then released another mixtape in 2014, "Days Before Rodeo". Thanks to these mixtapes, the media and insiders discovered this new talent, already seen as one of the future stars of urban music. This time, under the "GOOD MUSIC" label of the Chicago rapper/producer/designer, Travis released his first studio album in 2015: "Rodeo".
With his dreamy and energetic style, blending electronic influences, gimmicks, and catchy melodies, his album quickly achieved both critical and commercial success. Travis Scott positioned himself as one of the leading figures in music, earning the status of new leader of the rap movement. Loving to play with codes, the artist has adopted many nicknames throughout his career. The most famous is "La Flame", taken from an American urban expression symbolizing an energetic and wild vibe. "Cactus Jack" is also often used by the rapper. A direct reference to his first name Jacques, it’s also a nod to his Texan roots and the villain from Hal Needham’s 1979 parody western.
In 2016, the Houston-born artist unveiled his second album "Birds in The Trap Sing McKnight," which cemented his position as the prince of trap. Several solo and collaborative projects followed, including one with Quavo from Migos. But it was in 2018 that "La Flame" truly broke out and claimed the crown as the new king of rap. After a powerful media and marketing campaign, his highly anticipated third album "ASTROWORLD" was released, securing his name in culture for eternity.
TRAVIS SCOTT X NIKE: BEYOND US RAP
A fashion enthusiast, Travis Scott stands out beyond music thanks to his style and taste for premium pieces. A trendsetter, the young man is a true lover of luxury and "luxury fashion." He completed his first collaboration in 2017 with the brand Helmut Lang. From Louis Vuitton to the many streetwear brands, "La Flame" is at the heart of the trend, cultivating its own visual identity. He also models for numerous brands.
Passionate about sneakers, he was one of the first to sport a pair of Yeezy at the time of their release announcement. He collaborated for the very first time with Nike on a pair of Air Force 1 in 2017, which he reissued in a Sail version in 2018, preceding the famous Jordan 1.
After the AF1, Travis Scott reimagined other iconic models from the Nike catalog, such as the Air Max 1, the Air Trainer 1, the Air Max 270, and the Dunk Low.
NIKE TRAVIS SCOTT JORDAN
Also a huge fan of the brand Air Jordan, he reworked the Air Jordan model Trunner LX in his own image. The few pairs of this model will be exclusively for his personal use and will not be released in stores.
Today, one of the most sought-after pairs on the market, he went on to work on other models. He mainly reinterprets silhouettes from the Jumpman brand:
- In 2018, the two entities reimagined the Air Jordan 4. The AJ4 "Cactus Jack" with its electric blue upper. The pair was also released in several other "Friends and Family" versions: Purpe, Grey, and Nike Air.
- In 2019, the Air Jordan 1 Travis Scott "Cactus Jack" with its taupe-colored base and inverted Swoosh. Teased on social media, the model was released in limited quantities on the night of the Grammys ceremony in February. It was made public a few weeks later, at the same time as a streetwear collection.
Since these two iconic models, the American rapper and the Swoosh brand have multiplied their collaborations, notably on the Air Jordan 1 and the Jordan 6. The AJ1 has been reimagined in multiple variations such as the Air Jordan 1 Low OG Travis Scott Olive, the Air Jordan 1 Low OG Travis Scott Reverse Mocha and the dark Air Jordan 1 Low OG Travis Scott Black Phantom. The "Goosebumps" singer has also reworked the AJ1 Low in a version specially designed for golf. In June 2024, the Air Jordan 1 Low OG Travis Scott Golf Neutral Olive was thus released.
Recently, after many reimagined versions of the iconic models from Nike, Jordan and Travis Scott unveiled in 2024 the artist from Houston's very first signature model, the Jumpman Jack.
Even though he designed his first silhouette, Travis Scott will continue to reinvent the iconic models of Air Jordan. As such, a Air Jordan 1 Low Shy Pink and a Air Jordan 1 Low OG Dark Pony in pinkish tones are reportedly planned for 2025.
The future of the Houston prodigy, who has been named ambassador for arts and education, looks bright. There is no doubt that Travis Scott aka Cactus Jack is destined to enter the pantheon of artists who have left an indelible mark on the history of music and fashion.
