The North Face
THE NORTH FACE, THE NUPTSE DOWN JACKET AND SIXTY YEARS OFOUTDOOR CALIFORNIAN
DOUG AND SUSIE TOMPKINS OPENED A SHOP IN SAN FRANCISCO IN 1966
It all started with a climbing equipment store in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco, in October 1966. Douglas Tompkins and his wife Susie — who later founded Esprit — called it The North Face, named after the north face of the mountains, the coldest and the most difficult to climb. The Grateful Dead play at the inauguration. Two years later, the store was sold to Hap Klopp, who moved to Berkeley and began manufacturing: sleeping bags, geodesic tents, backpacks. The half-dome logo, inspired by the Half Dome of Yosemite, appeared in 1971.
The following decades established the classics The North Face. The Base Camp Duffel in 1979, the fleece Denali in 1988, and especially the Nuptse in 1992: a down jacket in 700 cuetin down, with large tubes, cut for the Himalayas and adopted by the streets of New York the following winter. In 2000, the brand joined the VFgroup, and its double life really began — expedition equipment manufacturer on one side, streetwear brand on the other.
SUPREME, GUCCI, KAWS: THE COLLABORATIONS THAT MADE THE LEGEND
No brand outdoor has collaborated so much that The North Face. Supreme since 2007, twice a year, with Nuptse in leather, leaves, cards — the most resold pieces of streetwear. Gucci in 2021, for an entire collection that brought the down jacket back to the catwalks. Sacai, Junya Watanabe, Brain Dead. And in October 2022, KAWS : the New York artist took over the archives — the 1994 Himalayan Parka, the 1986 Mountain Jacket, a hooded popover - to put your XX and colors on, in Bolt Blue and black. It is these parts, with the 1996 Retro Nuptse, which make up our selection when they come back.
NUPTSE, MOUNTAIN JACKET, HIMALAYAN: UNDERSTANDING THE MODELS
The 1996 Retro Nuptse is the benchmark down jacket: down 700, horizontal sausages, high collar, hood tucked into the collar, short cut. The 1986 Mountain Jacket is the historic technical jacket, two layers, two-tone, with chest pockets, without insulation - the rain jacket that you wear on a hoodie. The 1994 Himalayan Parka is the warmest and longest, 700 cuetin too, designed for camps basic. Three pieces, three uses, and just one size rule: take your usual size, the cut is already generous.
HOW TO WEAR THE NORTH FACE IN THE CITY
The Nuptse can be worn open over a hoodie or closed over a t-shirt, with straight jeans or cargo, and a chunky sneaker that balances the volume. The Mountain Jacket goes with everything technical — hiking pants, Salomon, Gore-Tex. In our department streetwear, The North Face is the brand outdoor that everyone has adopted, and its collaborations with Supreme are among the most sought after pieces on the market. Our jackets and down jackets bring the Nuptse together with their neighbors, and our boots complete them from below.
