AIR JORDAN 1 LOW: THE ICONIC MODEL IN A LOW VERSION
THE HISTORY OF THIS NIKE, WHICH BEGINS IN 1985
A genuine symbol of hip-hop and sporting culture, the history of this pair is as complex as it is full of detail. Backed by newcomers and long-standing enthusiasts alike, the Air Jordan 1 is quite simply seen as a must-have in the world of the sneaker. This silhouette, first meant for the basketball court, was created in 1985 by Peter Moore, the very famous designer who also created the Nike Dunk that same year. Built on an architecture and a design close to the Air Force 1, it is in fact the very first pair to have been sold by the brand Air Jordan , co-created by Michael Jordan and Nike. It is worth noting, however, that Michael Jordan wore the Nike Air Shipfor a few months, the time it took the designers at Nike to develop the Air Jordan 1 we know today. Just as on the period model, we find the famous winged ball more commonly called the “Jordan Wings”, which served as a signature.
In terms of performance, Nike's Air technology has been in the sole since 1985 to give maximum comfort and support as well as reinforced protection at the ankle. As an aside, the first version of this silhouette, named Bred, was not only banned from the courts by the NBA but also not really to MJ's taste, as he found the chosen colours rather loaded: “They make me think of the devil”, he said at the time.
A RANGE OF AIR JORDAN 1 LOW FOR WOMEN AND MEN
While the model first offered in 1985 was a fairly high version, the brand with the Jumpman did not settle for what it had and sought to go further by developing two complementary models. An intermediate version nicknamed the Air Jordan 1 Mid would appear at the start of the 2000s. Known to everyone, the Air Jordan 1 High has a high construction over the ankle. It has seen a multitude of retro reissues, and that since its launch year. How could we not mention the Air Jordan 1 Retro High Royal Toe or the Air Jordan 1 High Shattered Backboards 3.0 , which have left their mark these last few months.
The Air Jordan 1 Mid, offered to the public to give a different style while staying in line with the OG model, takes up the same design but has a lower construction than its big sister, with a collar stopping at mid-ankle. This version has been widely brought to the fore since the end of 2019, notably thanks to the Fearless pack and the much sought-after AJ1 Mid Maison Chateau Rouge. A model that is therefore gaining in popularity and that has editions taking up the colourways of 1985.
The Air Jordan 1 Low , for its part, goes for a low shape, ideal for summer days or simply for those who like to vary their sneakers. It is quite clearly a success for Jordan, which has pulled off the bet of carrying all its history across different versions of the model, leaving a wide choice for Air Jordan 1 fans depending on their preferences, the seasons and their mood of the moment.
AIR JORDAN 1 LOW: A MODEL GAINING IN POPULARITY
Since the rise of the retro versions in the 2000s, Jordan was largely focused on releasing its Highmodel, seen as the premium model of its range. Generally, you could find the Mid and Low versions in large quantities in shopping centres, these models sitting rather as the entry level of the Jordan 1 and as secondary models. But for a few years now, Jordan Brand has taken a real turn and made efforts to diversify its models. There are more and more colourways on the Air Jordan 3 or the genuine revelation of recent years, the Air Jordan 4. This is borne out in the figures: in 2016, of the 40 models offered, no AJ1 Mid was part of the collection and only 4 were AJ1 Lows. On the other hand, in 2019 there were 35 Mid and 17 Low among the 80 models launched.
Thanks to this turn taken by Nike & Jordan, we have lately seen more limited versions of the Air Jordan 1 Low, notably with the AJ1 Low Paris or the many colourways of the Air Jordan 1 Travis Scott : Medium Olive, Velvet Brown, Olive, or the more recent Shy & Tropical Pink. On top of that, the retro colourways do not escape the low version either: we find the Royal Toe, Shattered Backboard or the UNCversions. A shift much appreciated by the sneaker community, for whom a very wide choice of colours, shapes and designs is now available.
