Nike Air Max 1
NIKE AIR MAX 1: A REVOLUTIONARY SILHOUETTE.
NIKE AIR MAX 1: THE HISTORY OF AN ICON.
In 1986, Nike was going through a small period of decline and wanted to modernise its product catalogue. The brand from Beaverton therefore called on Tinker Hatfield, footwear designer and architect by training, to offer them the model that would relaunch the company of Phil Knight. To create this design, Tinker drew on the Centre Georges Pompidou , which he saw during a trip to Paris. The designer was struck by the air bubbles gathered on the outer structure of the building and decided to reproduce them on his new model. That is how the Nike Air Max 1 OG Redwas born, the first pair from Nike to have a visible air bubble on the midsole. The Air Max technology was in fact taken up on several other designs that Mr Hatfield would provide for the Air Jordan range, such as the Air Jordan 3 and the Air Jordan 4.
THE BIRTH OF A CULT MODEL, THE AIR MAX 1.
Sold for the very first time on 26 March 1987, the pair met with immediate international success and established itself as the on-trend model par excellence. Every year on 26 March, Nike celebrates the anniversary of the silhouette with “Air Max Day”, a special day that gives rise to the creation of new pairs and special editions such as the Air Max 1 Evolution of Icons which takes up the emblematic models of the range. In 1990, Tinker Hatfield presented us with the Air Max 90The little sister of the Air Max 1 has a more aggressive silhouette and a more voluminous air bubble . Its OG colourway is the Air Max 90 Infrared. A few years later, in 1995, Sergio Lozano would present the Air Max 95 , which draws on human anatomy. Two years later, Christian Tresser drew on Japanese high-speed trains for the design of the emblematic Air Max 97. In constant innovation, the air bubble range grew with the Air Max 98 , which marks the return of Sergio Lozano at the helm.
EMBLEMATIC AIR MAX 1 COLLABORATIONS: PATTA, CLOT, SEAN WOTHERSPOON, PARRA, TRAVIS SCOTT.
The Air Max 1 is among the rare sneaker models to have had such longevity. A true icon of pop culture and of the streetwear movement, several names have had the chance to collaborate with Nike on the silhouette and so create original models in limited editions. One of its most famous collaborators is none other than the legendary shop Patta. Based in Amsterdam, the store is behind the finest packs of the model, such as the 5th Anniv Pack of 2009/2010 with the legendary Air Max 1 Chlorophyll. More recently, in 2021, the Dutch label gave us the pack “The Wave”, made up of four iterations: the Monarch, the Noise Aqua, the Rush Maroon and the Black Grey. Some artists have also been able to reinvent the model, like Parra , Edison Chen and his label Clot or Sean Wotherspoon. In 2022, it was the turn of the charismatic Travis Scottto reinvent Tinker Hatfield's design with the Baroque Brown and the Saturn Gold .
