Sarah Baker
SARAH BAKER, THE PERFUME HOUSE BORN IN AN ART GALLERY
AN AMERICAN ARTIST IN LONDON, AN ART PROJECT BECOME A PERFUMERY
Sarah Baker is not a perfumer. Born in Buffalo, trained at the San Francisco Art Institute then at Goldsmiths College in London, she is an artist: her work explores celebrity, advertising and luxury marketing - star self-portraits, soap operas filmed like real ones, a telenovela performed live at the National Theater Studio. In 2014, she began a perfume project with theInstitute for Art and Olfaction in Los Angeles, just like putting on an exhibition. In 2015, the project became a house. In 2016, the first two juices, Leopard and Greek Keys, were presented at the Hammer Museum.
The founding principle has not changed: Baker writes the screenplay, and an independent perfumer, named on each bottle, composes it. Ashley Eden Kessler, Sarah McCartney of 4160 Tuesdays, Chris Maurice, Miguel Matos, Margaux Le Paih Guérin have all signed for the house. The first inspirations came from luxury fabric patterns – leopard, lace, tartan, Greek keys; the following ones moved towards theater, provocation and humor.
ROCOCO PIE, VELVET VENDETTA, JUNGLE JEZEBEL: PERFUMES THAT PLAY A ROLE
Each perfume Sarah Baker is a character. Rococo Pie smells like warm peach pie, served in a boudoir — the house gourmand, and its greatest success. Velvet Vendetta is a dark, velvet and revenge extract. Jungle Jezebel dares to go bananas, big time, and divides exactly as he wants. Symmetry, by Chris Maurice, is a fresh oud in perfect balance, the most portable of all. Riders smells of horses, stables and leather, without metaphor. Around it, Charade places white flowers on rustic leather, and the peach and oud trilogies organize the rest of the catalog.
HOW TO APPROACH SARAH BAKER
By the Scented Portfolio, the discovery box, if you find it: it's a house that tests itself, because its perfumes are written for provoke a reaction, not to please everyone. Symmetry and Charade are the safe entries; Rococo Pie the gourmet starter; Jungle Jezebel and Riders bets. All are mixed, most in extract, and last the day.
WHERE DOES SARAH BAKER IN OUR SELECTION
In our department niche perfumes, it is the most theatrical house, neighboring Liquides Imaginaires for narrative and Borntostandout for provocation. Rococo Pie joins the gourmet perfumes, Symmetry and Riders the woody. The difference with all the others: here, the name of the perfumer is on the box, and it is the artist who put it there.
