MEN'S STREETWEAR JOGGERS: SWEATPANTS, TECH FLEECE AND TRACKPANTS
FLEECE SWEATPANTS, FROM ESSENTIALS TO HEAVYWEIGHT
The joggers that redefined the category did not come from a sportswear brand. When Jerry Lorenzo launched Essentials in 2018 as the accessible line of Fear of God, he established heavyweight fleece, sand and stone tones, a subtle rubberized logo, and a fit that falls over the shoe. The classic Sweatpant, the roomier Relaxed, the washed Vintage Fleece, and the softer Lounge now cover every use, and the Essentials joggers category brings them together every season.
Fleece is judged by its weight. A loopback fleece, looped on the inside like those from Power Goods, breathes and can be worn from spring onward; brushed fleece provides warmth; a heavyweight fleece at over 400 g/m², in the style of Mutual Differences, has the structure of trousers and barely wrinkles. It is this thickness, far more than the fit, that separates joggers you wear outside from joggers you keep at home.
EMBROIDERED AND GRAPHIC JOGGERS: DENIM TEARS, SP5DER, BBC
Fleece has also become a storytelling medium. The Cotton Wreath from Denim Tears, that embroidered cotton wreath designed by Tremaine Emory in 2019, refers to the history of cotton and slavery in the United States — a sweatpant that says something before it is even worn. Sp5der, Young Thug's brand, moves in the opposite direction with the spiderwebs of the OG Web and the saturated colors of the Legacy line.
Between the two, the Distorted Arch Logo from Billionaire Boys Club and the Big T Jogger from True Religion transpose onto fleece the signature these brands built elsewhere — the curved logo for one, the topstitching and horseshoe for the other.
TECH FLEECE AND TRACKPANTS: TECHNICAL JOGGERS
The Tech Fleece from Nike, introduced in 2013, created a third path: bonded fleece rather than brushed fleece, lighter, warmer, with flat seams and a fitted silhouette. The NOCTA version created with Drake keeps the construction and adds an open leg opening, the Open Hem, which completely changes how the fit reads.
The trackpant, meanwhile, comes back from 90s tracksuits: woven fabric rather than knit, side stripes, elasticated waist. Perplex offers it in stone, mocha, moss, or volcano colorways, The New Originals stamps it with its emblem, and Casablanca does it in a Laurel or scuba version. It’s the sweatpant that pairs most easily with a shirt.
FIT, FLEECE, LEG OPENING: HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SWEATPANTS
The leg opening decides everything. Cuffed, tightened with a ribbed cuff, it clears the shoe and calls for a sneaker you want to show off. Open hem or straight leg, it falls straight and wears like trousers. Wide or baggy, it borrows from skatewear and calls for a roomy top to keep the proportions right.
As for color, heather grey remains the safe bet because it absorbs light and hides creases; black fades quickly in the wash, beige shows marks. For a matching set, a hoodie from the same brand and the same season guarantees an identical shade — fleece fabrics vary from one production run to another. And when the priority is the look rather than comfort, the trousers section offers the same fits in canvas and denim.
