VEJA, THE FRENCH ECO-RESPONSIBLE SNEAKER BRAND SINCE 2004
2003, THE SOCIAL AUDIT IN CHINA THAT LED TO THE CREATION OF VEJA
Sébastien Kopp and François-Ghislain Morillion are childhood friends, management graduates, and were 25 when everything changed. In 2003, they conducted a social audit in China on behalf of a major fashion brand. What they saw there—the excesses of the system—led them to build an alternative rather than write yet another report.
The company was founded in 2004, and the first pairs came out of Brazilian workshops in 2005 — hence the two dates that circulate interchangeably online. The name itself expresses the project: veja means “look” in Portuguese. Just two pillars, embraced from the start and never ranked above one another: aesthetics and transparency.
AMAZONIAN RUBBER AND ORGANIC COTTON: THE MATERIALS OF VEJA
Most of the brand’s work happens upstream in the supply chain. The wild rubber harvested in the Amazon was paid in 2025 at five times the market price, a gap that directly funds the seringueiro communities. The cotton comes from Peru with Regenerative Organic certification, the leather from Uruguay and it is chrome-free tanned, and the polyester is recycled.
Then there is the most radical choice, and the one least often imitated: no advertising, ever. The budget that would normally go into campaigns is reinvested into matière première, making it possible to offer a price consistent with sourcing that costs four to five times more than the industry standard. Brand awareness was built through word of mouth, which explains the slowness of the early years and the strength of what followed.
CAMPO, V-90 AND VOLLEY: THE ICONIC MODELS OF SNEAKERS VEJA
The Campo is the most widely distributed: smooth leather, clean lines, an urban sneaker that works just as well with a suit as with jeans. The V-90 draws on the retro running of the 1990s, with a flat sole and elongated profile. The Volley revisits clay-court tennis, here rendered in leather rather than canvas. And the Salar LT pushes the brand toward lightweight trail.
They all share the lateral V and a sole made from Amazonian rubber. The dominant Extra White seen across the range makes it a safe bet in the white sneakers section, alongside Autry in the retro space and Diemme in the finely crafted European-made segment.
GET YOUR SNEAKERS VEJA REPAIRED RATHER THAN REPLACED
It is the logical extension of the model, and the point that competitor product pages systematically overlook. Veja operates repair workshops in Bordeaux, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, London, New York , Los Angeles and São Paulo, where soles are replaced and stitching is redone instead of buying again. The Veja General Store, opened in Paris in 2024, establishes this approach in a permanent location.
An approach that brings the brand closer to a bootmaker like Clarks, designed to last and be resoled, than to the usual sneaker cycle. For routine care, chrome-free tanned leather requires gentle cleaning and absolutely no machine washing: natural rubber does not tolerate heat or spin cycles.
