AIR JORDAN 6: THE SNEAKER OF MICHAEL JORDAN'S FIRST TITLE
AIR JORDAN 6: ITS HISTORY
Unveiled in 1991, the Air Jordan 6 was designed by the legendary Tinker Hatfield. He is the designer behind the Air Jordan designs from the 3 to the XV. It was wearing the Air Jordan 6, six years after the release of the Air Jordan 1, that Michael Jordan won his first title of NBA Champion and Finals MVP in the colours of the Chicago Bulls , against Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers.
At the time of its release, the Air Jordan 6 was available in five different colourways, led by the mythical White Infrared and Black Infrared.
A NIKE SNEAKER WITH A CLEAN DESIGN
With the aim of always going further and drawing the best possible pair for His Airness, Tinker Hatfield redoubled his efforts on the Air Jordan 6. Far, for instance, from the classic design of the Air Jordan 1 Mid and the Air Jordan 1 High.
It was at the request of Michael Jordan himself that Hatfield set about building a cleaner model, in style as well as in material. For MJ, the reference was the Italian shoe built from a single panel in a single material. To meet the needs of the American superstar, the designer from Oregon made the Air Jordan 6 a better finished and lightermodel. Instead of leather, it is suedette, a synthetic leather, that is used. The panels even draw a “23”, a reference to Michael Jordan's number. Because of the loss of breathability caused by that suedette, the man who started at Nike by designing the Air Jordan 3 chose to add perforations across a large part of the model.
Several parts are carefully worked, such as the heel tab and the tongue. For the first time, an Air Jordan shoe carries a heel tab. Sitting at the back of the sneaker, this small strap makes lacing quicker and easier. This piece was in fact inspired by the spoiler of Michael Jordan's Porsche. This strap would later be reworked but finally dropped from the Air Jordan 11onwards.
Built in integrated neoprene, the tongue was also carefully worked. It has two openings that give the foot better support and let it breathe more easily. On the other hand, the Air Jordan 6 is the last pair to carry a visible air bubble in the midsole.
THE COLLABORATIONS OF THE JORDAN 6
Surely less popular today than certain other basketball models from the brand, the Air Jordan 6 has nevertheless had its share of collaborations too. For its first joint project, the AJ6 worked with young patients through the Doernbecher programme in 2009.
Later, the Jumpman put the Air Jordan 6 forward through collaborations with Jordan Motorsports, Macklemore, the manga Slam Dunk and Gatorade between 2010 and 2017.
More recently, Jordan Brand worked on its number 6 model with Aleali May (spring 2019), the PSG (summer 2019) and Levi's in 2020. But the loudest collaboration on the Air Jordan 6 was the one with the American rapper Travis Scott in 2019, a year after the Air Jordan 4. Released in two colourways, the British Khaki and the Medium Olive, this Air Jordan 6 has the particular feature of small press-stud pockets on the side panels.
JORDAN 6 RETRO
Nine years after its first release in 1991, the Air Jordan 6 saw a revival with the arrival of the first Retro models in 2000. Later, it was in 2002 that the Air Jordan 6 made its return, in a low-topversion.
