NIKE DUNK LOW: A SILHOUETTE THROUGH THE ERAS
THE FOUNDATION OF URBAN CULTURE
Four decades after the creation of the slam dunk, Nike is a little over ten years old and the popularity of basketball is booming. The year 1985 would go down as one of the most pivotal for Nike Basketball , since it marks the birth year of the Nike Dunk.
Born from the drive of a young design team, the basketball shoe Nike Dunk is powered by performance innovation that translates naturally into street style. The leather design reinforced the interest of Nike in basketball and its obsession with creating shoes that improve athletes' performance.
Originally imagined by the designer Peter Moore and called College Color High, the Nike Dunk was an artistic blend of different models, a common practice at Nike for basketball sneakers of the 80s. The 1985 silhouette draws in particular on its big sister the Nike Air Force 1, born three years earlier.
THE NIKE DUNK LOW AND ITS UNPRECEDENTED COLLABORATIONS
As much as its role in the spread of urban culture, the collaborations on this model also have their part to play in the success of the Dunk Low. The year 2019 closed with a Nike Off-Whitecollaboration. The two brands offered 3 versions of the Dunk Low in a deconstructed leather style combining comfort and trend. These are the colourways Michigan, University Red and Pine Green.
The work done on those pairs is the starting point for unprecedented, never-before-seen collaborations, such as the one between Nike and the American ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's. The pair was leaked several times on social media and gave rise to growing hype around the release. On 26 May 2020, the public discovered the Nike SB Dunk Low Ben & Jerry's Chunky Dunky , with sought-after materials, carefully worked details and a style true to the Ben & Jerry's world. On top of that, a Special Box edition was unveiled, a previously unseen packaging shaped like a Ben & Jerry's ice cream tub holding the pair.
After several projects alongside Nike, Comme des Garçons also imagined two versions of the Dunk Low in May 2020, in a restrained and very on-trend grey and black style. These numerous collaborations mean success for the model, which comes to the front of the stage with several colourways and versions…
NIKE DUNK LOW FOR WOMEN AND MEN: AS ON-TREND AS EVER
The model has been a major player on the sneaker scene for several decades. Even today, Nike keeps unveiling new colourways and new collaborations. This desire to make 2022 a defining season for the silhouette is clearly stated by the American giant, as shown by the many iterations of the Nike Dunk High.
Earlier, in December 2019, through the collaboration with Off-White on 3 versions of the Dunk Low, the sneaker world rediscovered the model, creating fresh enthusiasm. The brand with the Swoosh heard that loud and clear and decided to imagine 4 versions inspired by the Nike Dunk High pack Be True To Your School, first released in 1985, with the aim of going back to basics and to the sporty, retro side of the silhouette. So we discovered the colourways Kentucky, Syracuse , then a few months later the St John's, Brazil and Champ Colors.
Thanks to that resounding return, the model establishes itself as an undisputed must-have . New releases remain frequent, always varied and original, offering the public a wide range of the best-seller. Still legendary, this model has managed to take hold of two strong cultures, basketball and skateboarding, to energise the public's view of these sneakers and become a symbol of both worlds.
