New Balance 1906r
THE HISTORY OF THE NEW BALANCE 1906R
In 2020, New Balance saw a real revival of popularity, notably with its various collaborations on the New Balance 990 or with the huge success of the iconic New Balance 2002R, by teaming up with names such as thisisneverthat to promote the retro-futuristic model. Two years later, the shoe brand joined the Korean streetwear label again to do to the 1906 what they had done to the New Balance 550 : bringing an archive sneaker model up to date. Before it was given its “R”, the 1906 was a high-end lifestyle silhouette that made its debut in 2009. At a relatively high price of 250 dollars, the shoe came with a Made in USA build. When the 1906R was reintroduced a decade later, the Boston brand went for a new, more affordable price as well as a host of design changes, including but not limited to the use of the sole of the NB 860v2 on the upper of the 1906. Dressed with an “R” much like the new 2002R, the shoe keeps its original look and style. Made up of breathable mesh inserts, synthetic panels and accents in superior-quality nubuck, the silhouette celebrates the emblematic look of the runners of the 2000s. To better celebrate the release of the 1906R, New Balance teamed up with the famous stylist and fashion director Akio Hasegawa, who created a series of visuals based on the theme of the “Past” and the “Future”. The late 90s and the early 2000s were a time when many chased expectations for the future and longed for the latest technologies. It was an era of technological change set against the physical state of one's surroundings, such as the buildings, and the bricks and the materials with which they were built. In that sense, the 1906R is an excellent shoe that suits every style.
THE NEW BALANCE 1906R BACK AT THE FRONT OF THE STAGE
With thisisneverthat, the colourway calls to mind inspirations from the past, with touches of grey and navy blue appearing on the panels of the upper. The yellowed soles add a vintage touch, while the cream laces add a more contemporary one. This is further amplified by its silver shade, which pays tribute to one of the original colourways of the 1906. A few months later it was the turn of Yue Wu, the creator of the pack Refined Future , more commonly called Protection Pack. Its distinctive feature rests on its suede panels with a torn effect, which give a whole new dimension to the retro running low-top. With its four colourways, the 1906R Protection Pack looks set to be a must-have of 2023.
