Air Jordan 5
AIR JORDAN 5, WHEN BASKETBALL INSPIRES THE SNEAKER
THE AIR JORDAN 5, A MODEL WITH MANY INSPIRATIONS
Inspired by American fighter planes of the Second World War, the design of the legendary Air Jordan 5 by the famous Tinker Hatfield aims to stay true to the mindset of the greatest legend of the NBA : Michael Jordan. The designer Tinker Hatfield drew his inspiration from the shark teeth that can be made out on the front of those famous planes. An element easily spotted on the midsole of each edition, as on one of the very first OG colourways: the Air Jordan 5 Fire Red. The Air Jordan 5, an emblematic figure of the high point of Jordan's career, symbolises his physical and mental dominance in the game. With a functional and technical feel, the silhouette that came to light in 1990 was first offered in three colourways: Fire Red, Metallic Silver and New Emerald.
Although often overshadowed by the success of the very popular Air Jordan 1 or the unavoidable Air Jordan 4, the Air Jordan 5 remains one of the finest successes in the history of sneakers .
A SILHOUETTE MARKED BY LEGENDARY COLOURWAYS
While the first three OG colorways are already unavoidable, the b-ball silhouette did indeed take a turn by drawing on the codes of sneaker culture. Witness the collaboration with the brand of Virgil Abloh, which gave the silhouette unprecedented visibility. And the result speaks for itself: the Air Jordan 5 Retro Off-White Black and the Air Jordan 5 Retro Off-White Sail are among the finest releases of 2020, coming to mark the 30th anniversary of the silhouette. With a vintage side and plays on materials and colours, this collaboration is already seen as a classic of the Off-White x Jordanpairing.
Other editions such as the Air Jordan 5 Retro What The stand out through unprecedented originality by mixing the most iconic colorways of the Air Jordan 5: Tokyo, Raging Bull, Quai 54…
THE BEGINNING OF AN ICON?
If there is one thing we know, it is that the fifth signature shoe of “His Airness” from 1990 marks the beginning of a new era on the basketball scene. During the 1990-1991season, Michael Jordan won the first NBA title for the franchise of the Chicago Bulls and delivered performances that would remain engraved in history. Marked by the collaborations with Supreme or Off-White, the Air Jordan 5 is today one of the b-ball silhouettes richest in history. A past that keeps inspiring the present, notably with the Air Jordan 5 Retro Quai 54 , which comes to mark one of the most important events of basketball culture.
