Nike Air Max BW
NIKE AIR MAX BW
THE AIR MAX BIG WINDOW TURNS 30
A cult model from Nike, the Big Window is the third model designed by Tinker Hatfield in the Air Maxrange. Released in 1991, it is presented as the Air Max IV and follows the very popular Air Max 1 of 1987 and Air Max 90 of 1990. Very popular in Europe, the running shoe would become the icon of the “golden age” of the Air Max and would embody the DNA of several “counterculture” movements across the continent. In the Netherlands, more precisely in Rotterdam, the Air Max BW would become the centrepiece of the dress code of Gabber culture, a variant of hardcore techno, particularly popular, running between 140 and 220 BPM. Among the followers of that scene, the Air Max BW was paired with bomber jackets and colourful tracksuits. In England, the trainer would become the standard-bearer of the Grime movement, a musical genre influenced by UK Garage, Hip-Hop and House. In France, it was through French rap that the BW would become popular in the neighbourhoods, notably in Lyon, for its aggressive style and its robust build. Later, the trend for BW would run out of steam and would give way to more modern models such as the Air Max 97 and the Air Max 98.
AIR MAX BW: THE RELEASES NOT TO MISS
To celebrate 30 years of the Big Window, the brand with the swoosh gives us the special reissue of the OG colourway Persian Violet of 1991. Fans of the retro model for men and women will be delighted, since a previously unseen City Pack appeared in 2021. It pays tribute to the cities of Rotterdam, Lyon, Beijing and Los Angeles through special colourways with personalised details, such as the insoles and the tongues. Nike does not stop there and unveils several more on-trend colourways, such as the very fine Air Max BW Light Stone with its cream colour shades, which go with a great many styles for men and women. Thanks to those new editions, the BW would manage to reach a wider audience, notably thanks to the OG Cream, OG Sport Red and White Persian Violet colourways. That last edition acts as a “reverse” version of the original model. It is in fact nicknamed the Big Window because of its air bubble, which is larger than that of the Air Max 90.
