Air Jordan 11
AIR JORDAN 11: ITS HISTORY
During the 1995-1996 NBA season, MJ took back control of his career and of his collaboration with the brand with the Swoosh. That gave rise to a legendary silhouette that marked its era and started a clear shift in the design of the Air Jordan and of sneakers in general, thanks to the genius of Tinker Hatfield. Its patent leather was completely ahead of its time, and it was the first time such a thing had been done on a pair of trainers. There is also the translucent icy outsole, which had disappeared since the Jordan VI. As usual, Michael Jordan wanted something completely new, combining class and technique. Tinker, for his part, drew on a convertible car, hence the patent leather, to recall the metallic paint of a body panel. And, for once, he also drew on a lawnmower to design the Air Jordan XI. The pair also includes a carbon fibre section to reinforce strength and lightness at the arch of the foot on the inner side.
After his return in 1995, Michael Jordan needed to get back into the swing of things. With the AJ11, you could say he found his form again: 72 wins for 10 losses (an NBA regular season record), with among other things the title of MVP (Most Valuable Player) and top scorer. The Bulls won the NBA championship for the fourth time on 16 June 1996, against the Seattle SuperSonics. As it was Father's Day and Michael Jordan was suffering from not having his father at his side for that event, he collapsed in tears in the changing room after the game.
THE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THIS NIKE SNEAKER
JORDAN 11 RETRO
As with the Air Jordan 1, the 11 has had several reissues faithful to the original 1995 colourways. Michael Jordan wore theAir Jordan 11 Concord for the first time on 7 May 1995, against the Orlando Magic led by Shaquille O'Neal. When he returned to the NBA, Michael Jordan wore the number 45 at first, so the first Concord, still a PE, carried the number 45 on the heel. When the first 11 Concord went on sale in November 1995, things were back in order and Magic Mike had taken back his number 23 as well as his superpowers. This pair was a success, but sales were not exceptional. In February 1997, on the eagerly awaited release of the film Space Jam, the AJ11 was well represented in a previously unseen black version. It was in fact after the film that the Concord really found success, with its first reissue in 2000, accompanied by the Air Jordan 11 Space Jam. It was at that time that the Jordan 11 became a cult pair for sneaker fans. At its third reissue in 2011, after a “Defining Moments Pack” in 2006, some violent riots broke out on the day the 11 Concord was released. To finish on a more technical note, it is worth pointing out that a fairly indecipherable section is embroidered in the middle of the tongue: it reads “Jumpman/Jordan”, to be read vertically. The 11 would get its Low version, which had great success among women, just like the Air Jordan 1 Mid, a more compact version of the Air Jordan 1 High.
JORDAN 11 LOW
Over the years, Jordan Brand has tended to move away from the Beaverton firm by offering more and more lifestyle products, aimed at widening the range of MJ's label and getting a variety of products that would round out the retro editions such as the Air Jordan 3. To that end, the sportswear giant decided to rework its original models in Low versions. The Air Jordan 6 Low was the first to appear. Its light build and its on-trend look met with dazzling success, notably among smaller sizes. Some time later it was the Air Jordan 11 Low that was presented to the wider public in 2015, for the 20 years of the silhouette signed by Tinker Hatfield, with the original Bred colourway, which pays tribute to Michael Jordan's legendary 1995-1996 season at Nike. An IE version would also appear. It is marked by an upper in mesh and grained leather, a departure from the traditional patent leather, meant to be more comfortable and with a more lifestyle spirit than the retro models.
