Nike Fear of God
NIKE FEAR OF GOD, BETWEEN SPORTSWEAR AND INNOVATION
FEAR OF GOD, A BRAND, A MAN: JERRY LORENZO
Fear of God, the cultural blend of grunge rock and hip-hop. This brand was founded by Jerry Lorenzo in 2013. Son of a famous American baseball player and a devout believer, he took an interest in fashion very early. Despite his lack of experience, he set up his brand and his own label: Fear of God.
Inspired by figures such as Kurt Cobain or Allen Iverson , and shaped by his faith, Jerry creates models whose soul lies in the lines. The brand works long, oversized silhouettes and plays on the layering of light materials. Comfort and practicality in clothing sit at the heart of Jerry Lorenzo's creations. The brand becomes more and more popular thanks to the endorsement of many influential figures such as Kanye West, Kendall Jenner and Justin Bieber. They do not hesitate to publicly praise the artistic style and the products imagined by the American designer. With looks running from acid-washed jeans to XXL denim jackets and flannel check shirts, the designer brings together hip-hop and grunge influences for a result that is both current and popular.
THE MERGING OF SPORTSWEAR AND FASHION
Jerry Lorenzo draws on his childhood and his experiences to give his label his signature and his vision of fashion. He thus changes the world of fashion by managing to create a trend of “luxury sportswear ”. Bringing together sport and fashion, a childhood memory that has followed him since the start of his rise in haute couture.
“When I was little, in the 80s, and when I was finishing high school in the 90s, unlike today, it was the famous athletes and the professional sportsmen who dictated the way we wore our clothes every day.” Jerry Lorenzo
The founder of the American label has always wanted to highlight the impact of sport and fashion in everyday life. Fear of God is not only a brand, it is a way of thinking; it is feeling style, believing in your dreams and being at ease in your clothes. And so we saw hoodies and T-shirts in wide cuts with great comfort, recalling the clothes that basketball players wore in the 90s.
The brand would also drive the popular revival of concert merchandising, with the clothes designed for Justin Bieber's “Purpose Tour”. Fear of God then collaborates with various brands, confirming its position among the strong emerging names in fashion. Take the example of the collection with Nike , which includes an ultra-popular sneaker line. Like Virgil Abloh and Off-White, Jerry Lorenzo and his brand have today become essential figures of fashion and streetwear.
A NOTABLE COLLABORATION: NIKE FEAR OF GOD
Fear of God and Nike give us a revolutionary collaboration. With its first silhouette, Air Fear of God , released at the end of 2018, Jerry Lorenzo brings a fresh eye to the basketball sneakers of the brand with the swoosh. But the strength of this collaboration lies in its creative dimension: Fear of God does not rework an existing model, it innovates by inventing its own silhouette from the hand of Jerry Lorenzo.
“It is a shoe that should only be judged by the emotion it stirs in a child who sees it for the first time, whatever that emotion may be.” Jerry Lorenzo
This silhouette with its futuristic design is built on an inner bootie framed by a flexible structure made of mesh and TPU. The translucent blue “Zoom” part set into the sole brings a more technical approach to the pair. And for the finishing touch, nothing beats a mini swoosh recalling the collaboration with Nike. Available in several restrained colourways such as the Sail, Black or Light Bone, this sneaker was quickly taken up by sneaker fans. We also saw a second version appear, with a large swoosh . To move into a more lifestyle dimension, Fear of God would release two less technical silhouettes, the Air Skylon 2 and the Air Fear of God Raid. In the same way there is a clothing collection recalling the label's inspiration. With this collaboration, Fear of God has managed to widen its influence, to the point of being among the lasting collaborations of the brand fromOregon.
