Nike Air Max 96
AIR MAX 96 II: THE BEST MODELS
It all starts at the end of 1995: Sergio Lozano, the man behind the Air Max 95, is called back by Nike to carry on the Air Maxrange. He then joins the creative teams of Tinker Hatfield, the creator of the Air Max 1, Air Max 90… For this new edition, Lozano wants to keep the robust and hard-wearing DNA of his 95 while building in touches of bright colour such as royal blue or neon green. As for the shape, he draws on the movement of the waves in the ocean. Two years later, it is Sean McDowell, the creator of the Air Max Plus (Tn), who takes up the marine look as well as the colour gradients of the sunset. The running model is rolled out by Nike across the world. The pair is spotted on the feet of the greatest celebrities, from Scottie Pippen to the actors of the legendary television series Friends. Unfortunately, the futuristic sneaker does not meet with the hoped-for success; the public does not turn up and prefers to stay with the Air Max 95. It is only 20 years later, in 2016, that the Beaverton brand decides to reissue the controversial model. For its 20th anniversary, the Air Max 96 XX returns in its OG colourway but with a small twist: the Air Max sole, judged too heavy at the time, is replaced by a sole from the Air Max 95 Ultra for more lightness and comfort. Sneakerheads worldwide are fairly unhappy with that choice. You have to wait until 2021 for the swoosh to reissue it with its original sole, thanks to the Air Max 96 II. It is presented in its original colourways: Mystic Teal, Cherry and Goldenrod. To win over the hype world and propel the retro silhouette, Nike teams up with the New York brand Supreme on a pack of three Air Max 96: Camo, Black and Silver Bullet. Their distinctive feature? The panels traditionally in mesh are replaced by panels in transparent plastic.
WHAT TO WEAR WITH AIR MAX 96 II?
The Air Max 96 II are fairly simple to wear. Their low and robust silhouette makes it possible to pair them with any trousers. For an on-trend lifestyle style, go for classic blue denim jeans with a slightly oversized cut so that the trousers fall well over the pair. Avoid skinny cuts, which will only lengthen your feet and will not show off your sneakers. In the same style, military cargos will lift your streetwear look for men and women alike.
