New Balance 2002R Protection Pack
New Balance 2002R Protection Pack
Introduced by New Balance in 2020, the New Balance 2002R was meant to succeed the 2002, unveiled in 2010. It is this new silhouette, still in the vintage spirit of NB, that brought the Boston brand right back to the top of the bill. In large part thanks to the collection New Balance Protection Pack.
In 2021, and while NB was gradually regaining popularity among the young and among sneaker addicts, notably thanks to a colourful collaboration with Salehe Bembury, the heads of the American brand unveiled the Protection Pack. It is at that precise moment that, through the 2002R, New Balance would set the trends.
An innovative deconstructed silhouette
The Protection Pack was imagined by the designer of Chinese origin Yue Wu. At the start, he had in fact given the name “Refined Future” to this collection, before it was renamed by the first shop that put it on sale.
Released in 2021, the New Balance 2002R Protection Pack series takes up the curves of the original model. It adds a deconstructed feel created by panels in worn suede with a torn look, for a raw effect, almost second-hand. Unveiled at first through three colourways, the 2002R Protection Pack quickly saw new versions, each more irresistible than the last.
This technique of adding panels in torn suede was afterwards reused on the new silhouette imagined by NB, including the New Balance 1906R.
