NEW BALANCE 2002R: THE NEW HYPE
New Balance was founded in 1906 by William J. Riley, a shoemaker from Boston who set out to help people suffering from foot problems by developing orthopedic insoles that offered better support for the arch of the foot. The brand gained international recognition for its comfort and quality in the 1960s when it decided to enter the running footwear market. The brand stands out from its competitors thanks to its custom-made insoles, special attention to the choice of materials—which are known to be superior to those on the market—as well as the finishing touches and details on the various panels during manufacturing, which was originally Made In USA. In the 1980s, the brand decided to turn to the world of basketball with its New Balance 550 but remains well known thanks to the quality of its running models such as the Super Comp, which inspired designer Charlotte Lee for the design of the New Balance 327. The brand with the capital "N" stands out for the support and stability of its silhouettes originally created for athletic activity. Over the years, it has gained significant expertise in the technologies used for its models such as the New Balance 992, which became highly popular thanks to Steve Jobs, founder of Apple. The American brand continues to reinvent its image by collaborating with new designers such as Joe Freshgoods or JJJJound on its New Balance 990 range. The brand is even more talked about by releasing new colorways of its legendary New Balance 530 or the New Balance 204L which revisits the running style of the 2000.
NEW BALANCE 2002R FOR MEN AND WOMEN: A LATE SUCCESS
In 2010, the American designer Andrew Nyssen unveils the New Balance 2002, a premium running model intended to be high-end and therefore Made In USA . It will be released at a price of $250, making it one of the most expensive sneakers in the history of New Balance. The silhouette will achieve niche success but will fail to win over the general public. Nevertheless, the pair will be considered THE perfect shoe by Ronnie Fieg himself. The founder of the KITH label even stated that the full-length gel cushioning system in the sole was a suspension worthy of a luxury car. The shoe's moodboard was actually inspired by Bentley sedans and Hublot watches. It wasn’t until 2020 and a certain Tetsuya Shono that the silhouette saw a revival. Product Line Manager for New Balance Japan, Shono is a former footwear designer who examined the international commercial flop of the New Balance 2002, which had found its audience in Japan. He then decided to conceptualize a prototype that retained the original upper but swapped the full-length gel midsole for that of the New Balance 860v2, an N-ERGY sole that only has gel in the heel. This is how the New Balance 2002R we all know was born. The Japanese designer added the "R" to signify that the 2020 model was the "retro" of the 2010 version, similar to the naming of Jordan Brand reissues. One of Shono’s decisive choices was to relocate manufacturing to Asia instead of the original Made In USA. With lower labor costs, the launch price dropped dramatically from $250 to $130, to the delight of New Balance enthusiasts.
NEW BALANCE 2002R: EXCEPTIONAL COLLABORATIONS
For the international launch of the model, New Balance decided to team up with Salehe Bembury. A former designer for the Yeezy label, the New York artist was vice president of the sneakers and men's footwear department at the haute couture house Versace. The result of this collaboration produced the New Balance 2002R Peace Be The Journey, a pair inspired by the famous Antelope Canyon located in the southwest United States. The fruitful partnership continued in 2021 with the New Balance 2002R Water Be The Guide, which echoed the aquatic and desert tones of the Havasu Falls in the Arizona.
In early 2024, the Boston brand partnered with the famous label JJJJound to design a new 2002R model that combines everything we love about this pair: mesh base, suede and leather overlays, and technical details that make it so successful, such as effective ventilation and a sole equipped with ABZORB technology.
Beyond the collaborations, the New Balance 2002R remains one of the most appreciated NBs on the market. The Protection Pack from New Balance is notably the trendiest pack of the silhouette. This project was entrusted to Yue Wu , employee of the Boston brand, who managed to bring to life one of the most popular design, which was later adapted on the 1906R.
At the beginning of 2024, the brand then teamed up with the famous label JJJJound and reworked the creation of a new 2002R model combining a mesh base, suede and leather overlays, efficient ventilation, and a sole equipped with ABZORB technology. In 2025, the silhouette gets a fresh boost with the return of the New Balance Protection Pack, designed by Yue Wu, in its cult colorways Rain Cloud, Sea Salt and Phantom. A victim of its own success, the model is released in exclusive new colorways such as the Dragon Berry launched in February 2025, as well as the Pastel Blue, Olive/Black and Sky Blue versions in spring.
The new NB 2002R models are available in different colors, combining an elegant design and exceptional comfort. Discover the New Balance 2002R black, the New Balance 2002R blue or even the New Balance 2002R beige.
